Braves need a new 3B coach | Braves | Report: Brewers to hire Yost as manager

I don’t think it’s a huge loss. Nor is it exactly a golden opportunity. Only the Devil Rays are a more pathetic organization than the Brewers. Both teams were built by ex-Scheurholz assistants, by the way. Hmm.

Of course, the team Schuerholtz runs is pretty good, so “hmmmm” right back to you. :)

Other than Yost, how many of Cox’s Atlanta coaches have gotten major league managing jobs now? I don’t know if you can really count Jimy “Who Stole My Other M?” Williams and Don Baylor, as both had already been managers before getting another shot after a tenure with the Braves.

Grady Little sort of counts, since he was manager at Richmond, but didn’t he spend some time in San Diego as well? I think Yost is the first purely Braves-trained manager of the Bobby Cox era.

I know Cox has generally surrounded himself with old hands like Pat Corrales, Bobby Dews and Jim Beauchamp, but given the Braves recent success, you would think there would have been more by now. The Dodgers of the late 1970s/early 1980s produced Bill Russell, Glenn Hoffman, Dusty Baker, Bobby Valentine, Mike Scioscia, Davey Lopes, Jim Tracy and Kevin Kennedy to name a few.

One-M Williams was a coach with Bobby in Toronto, I think, before getting the managing job. Carlos Tosca can be considered a Bobby “disciple”, I suppose… Part of it is that Bobby has been rumored to retire for about ten years now, and so his coaches have been tempted to stay on on the chance they’ll get the Braves’ job.
