I just read the article on AJC about the Braves no longer being available on national TBS. I realize this may be old news to many, but I had not realized the change. Just wanted to say that as a former ATL resident who now lives in VA, I’ll miss the end of this era. True, it probably ended when they stopped using Skip, Pete and Don Sutton for the regular broadcasts. But still it feels like part of my childhood has been officially stored away in the closet, never to be unearthed again. I know I can go see the Braves play the Nats, or see them on a national broadcast every now and again, but it’s not the same. So God bless you Bob Horner and Dale Murphy, Claudell Washington and Otis Nixon, I salute you and TBS for all you’ve meant to me and my sporting life.

“Season over at last game thread”

For all the complaning a lot of us (including me) did over this past season, I’m sure probably everyone here is going to miss the Braves over a very long offseason.

    CJ Says:

Goodbye TBS – a truely sad day in Braves history. Here’s hoping Larry can come away with the NL hitting crown for his first Black Ink point. On a good note, I have two favorite teams above the Braves – FSU and the Miami Dolphins. Last night’s win over the Saban-coached Tide was twice as sweet.

    Ron Says:

    Last day of Woodward. Nice!

  5. 5
    Dan Says:

    Last day of Woodward. Nice!

What if they bring him back? It’s not entirely impossible.

  6. 6
    Ron Says:

Then we’ll know who will be in the “delenda est” on opening day.

    “It’s not entirely impossible.”

    Holy double negatives, Batman!

I just want to say thanks to the Bravesjournal regulars for keeping the season entertaining and to Mac for providing a civil and intelligent forum.

ububba, we’ll have to catch another game next year.

  10. 10
    RobBroad4th Says:

Chris Woodward has surpassed a long line of worthless players and should be officially crowned the worst Atlanta Brave in recent memory.

  11. 11
    Mikey@OU Says:

Well, now I’ll be forced to pay for the mlb package on the television. I got lucky this season to have a friend that had it so we shared. I wonder which of our announcers will be on the “Peach Tree Network” or whatever it will be called. Such a shame.

As for college football, my Sooners were awful yesterday. We had such a promising season until Colorado got the best of us.

So how will you be celebrating the last game on TBS today? I’m going with Stella Artois and maybe lunch from Chilis.

I hope Julio Franco gets at least one at bat today.

  12. 12
    JoeyT Says:

It will be exciting to see if Chipper can pass Coors for the batting title. There’s no shame in losing to Coors; even the great Tony Gwynn, for all his batting titles, lost to Coors one year. Still, it would be nice to see him pull it out.

  13. 13
    Dan Says:

What is the “Peach Tree Network”? I’ve read that two or three times now, and I’m still not sure what exactly it is or what it has to do with the 2008 Atlanta Braves.

  14. 14
    Brian J. Says:

Allow me to join the chorus who say “Thank You” to Mac for providing us this fine forum, from which we can complain about the agony caused by the team we love.

Chris Woodward has hit 200/ 253/ 281 this season, with below-average range at every position he’s played. Rafael Belliard, minus the glove. Thank Gawd and Greyhound he’ll be gone- I don’t think even Cox at his most addled can justify keeping him over Renteria/ Escobar/ Lillibridge/ a crate of rotten eggs.

  15. 15
    JoeyT Says:

WTBS is becoming Peachtree TV locally in Atlanta. They have 45 Braves games next year.

I’m not sure what that means for those of us zoned for the Braves by MLB, but not local to the Atlanta. Getting Extra Innings or whatever wouldn’t help, because the Braves will be blacked out. I don’t know if Peachtree will be available to cable providers outside the Atlanta area.

  16. 16
    SomeYahoo Says:

This is a sad day. A tough season comes to an end and the Braves lose one of their great distinctions (and for a while there their only distinction) in the national coverage on TBS. I hope they get a win today to finish things out in style. I think today is a day for real Braves fans (seems there are less and less of those every season). Next year looks really bright, but this year looked that way on the last day last year.

  17. 17
    Dan Says:

An afternoon game on TBS every Sunday next season. With Chip Caray and Tony Gwynn.

  18. 18
    timo Says:

WOW…. The Mets are falling apart.

  19. 19
    Dan Says:

4-0 Marlins in the top of the first, one out, runners on first and second.

    Glavine is really melting down.

  20. 20
    timo Says:

    This is fun.

  21. 21
    timo Says:

4-0 and Bases Loaded 1 Out.. Willis up.

  22. 22
    SomeYahoo Says:

I think I might reconsider my endorsement for bringing Tommy back next year.

  23. 23
    Brian J. Says:

    Glavine’s gone: .1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER (so far), 2 BB, 1 HBP.

Anyone else not want him back?

  24. 24
    SomeYahoo Says:

Holy cow. Glavine gets one out. 5 runs. Amazin’.

If Tommy retires, this is an unceremonious end.

  25. 25
    Dan Says:

Glavine hit Dontrelle Willis. 5-0 Marlins. I love it.

    Go Marlins and go Phillies!

  26. 26
    timo Says:

    Good old Jorge Sosa.

  27. 27
    Brian J. Says:

Agents Glavine and Sosa have done a masterful job of getting their revenge.

  28. 28
    Dan Says:

It’s only fitting since they gave us Chris Woodward.

  29. 29
    Dan Says:

Wow, 7-0 Marlins going into the bottom of the first.

I imagine the Mets’ blogs are calling for Tom Glavine to be lynched.

  30. 30
    SomeYahoo Says:

Agreed. It took a few years, but Glavine and Sosa were able to execute the plan to perfection.

But honestly, with Dontrelle on the mound, this one is far, far from over.

  31. 31
    JoeyT Says:

I can’t watch the Mets game. How does this happen:

    “C. Beltran singled to catcher”

  32. 32
    Brian J. Says:

And our lineups, for those who care:

Flying home to Georgia and their golf clubs:
    Escobar ss
    Harris cf
    CJones 3b
    Francoeur rf
    Thorman 1b
    BJones lf
    Sammons c
    Orr 2b
    Carlyle p

Able to get their golf clubs from the locker room:
    Anderson cf
    Biggio 2b
    Berkman 1b
    Lee lf
    Pence rf
    Loretta ss
    Wigginton 3b
    Ausmus c
    Paulino p

  33. 33
    JoeyT Says:

Looking at that lineup, I feel like the only reason Chipper is playing is the batting title.

  34. 34
    Brian J. Says:

Utley drives in Rollins with a sac fly, and it’s 1-0 Phillies.

  35. 35
    Dan Says:

End of the first, Marlins leading 7-1.

    Glavine’s line:

    0.1 IP
    5 H
    7 R
    7 ER
    2 BB
    0 K
    0 HR

  36. 36
    Mac Thomason Says:

    Probably a swinging-bunt single, Joey.

  37. 37
    Brian J. Says:

Bobby Cox and all his coaches will be back to be abused again next year. Rejoice!

  38. 38
    Dan Says:

ALL Braves’ coaches returning next season….including Roger McDowell.

  39. 39
    SomeYahoo Says:

Man, listening to a meaningless baseball game online is better than watching a a Buffalo-Jets (the CBS game here in LA today) game any day.

  40. 40
    Mac Thomason Says:

That’s what they think. Alex and I are going to kidnap someone, and if it isn’t Hampton it may be McDowell.

  41. 41
    Dan Says:

Less meaningful game: Braves or Falcons?

  42. 42
    'Rissa Says:

Why does Angel Hernandez have to be behind the plate? He hates us…

(and why Orr at 2nd instead of KJ? It’s not like KJ has had a lot of playing time recently.)

  43. 43
    Brian J. Says:

    Falcons game, definitely.

Chipper could win the batting title. No Falcon is going to win anything this year except, if he’s really lucky, a ticket out of town.

  44. 44
    Brian J. Says:

Chipper walks to stay at .339216.

  45. 45
    JoeyT Says:

No hit. You cannot beat Coors Field with walks.

  46. 46
    'Rissa Says:

Thank goodness Chipper’s in the batting race and Frenchy has a mini-streak, or else this lineup could be really horrid.

  47. 47
    Dan Says:

Walks are better than outs. If Chipper Jones has four at-bats and walks in all of them, and Holliday goes 0-4 or something like that, Chipper would win.

  48. 48
    Brian J. Says:

Holliday actually only “needs” to go 0-1 to drop his average below Chipper’s (to .339172).

And Buddy Carlyle “needs” to disappear right now. Why is he pitching instead of Chuck James or someone else who we’ll see again at some point in the future?

  49. 49
    SomeYahoo Says:

TBS sucks for not letting Pete call this game with Skip. Chip is his kid, but he didn’t earn it.

  50. 50
    Brian J. Says:

Roger McDowell talking to Carlyle: “One of us will be in a Braves uniform after today, and it won’t be you.”

  51. 51
    SomeYahoo Says:

haha. that was a good one.

  52. 52
    Dan Says:

Chuck James has some kind of arm problems. David O’Brien was talking about James possibly getting an MRI.

  53. 53
    'Rissa Says:

Whatever happened to Villareal? He needs to be up right now.

  54. 54
    csg Says:

James has upper arm stiffness, whatever that is. Maybe we can get Glavine back real cheap next year

  55. 55
    Brian J. Says:

Oh. Thanks, Dan, I didn’t know that.

San Diego’s jumped on Milwaukee in the first, up 3-0.

  56. 56
    SomeYahoo Says:

So maybe all this one-game playoff talk turns into nothing. NL: AZ, SD, PHI, CHI. I could go for Cubs/Sox series.

  57. 57
    'Rissa Says:

Yeah, it looks now like there will be no tiebreakers anywhere.

  58. 58
    Brian J. Says:

Skip Caray’s singing debut… hope you covered your ears.

  59. 59
    noah Says:

Mac, thank you for an enjoyable year of reading your forum. And thanks to the readers for a (reasonably) civil year of and conversation.

I read a number of baseball and football blogs and it’s a constant drag to see every downturn in a team’s fortunes bring out the inner-retard in every poster.

  60. 60
    SomeYahoo Says:

    phils 3-0

  61. 61
    urlhix Says:

Loved Skip singing. A perfect way to end the season.

  62. 62
    SomeYahoo Says:

man. Mets have left 8 men on in three innings. they’re lousy.

  63. 63
    Brian J. Says:

Mets have stranded eight in three innings to salt the wounds.

  64. 64
    Dan Says:

Still 7-1 after three innings. Willis out. He was walking everyone, including the bases loaded in the third inning….with a six run lead.

  65. 65
    JoeyT Says:

Just saw the highlight on TBS … that check swing out is hilarious.

  66. 66
    Mac Thomason Says:

New poll, based on the fact that there are only three real players in today’s lineup. Thorman? Orr? Sammons?

  67. 67
    Brian J. Says:

Chipper, Frenchy, Orr (sadly), Escobar, and Brandon. I think.

  68. 68
    'Rissa Says:

5—Frenchy, B. Jones, Chipper, Escobar, Thorman

  69. 69
    Dan Says:

I say five: Escobar, Chipper Jones, Francouer, Thorman and Brandon Jones.

  70. 70
    JoeyT Says:

Skip picking Tulowitzki is a little surprising. I would have expected him to go with Braun. I like Tulowtizki over Braun, too, though I’m pretty sure Braun will win.

  71. 71
    Dan Says:

    Chipper Jones now 0-1.

    Congratulations Holliday.

  72. 72
    'Rissa Says:

    Chipper, that won’t help…

  73. 73
    Brian J. Says:

    Chipper drops to .338552.

  74. 74
    SomeYahoo Says:

Those Amazins give up another. 8-1

  75. 75
    Mikey@OU Says:

I about fell out of my chair laughing whenever they showed Paul LoDuca checking his swing for that bases loaded 3rd out. Hahaha.

  76. 76
    ByDesign Says:

According to the Met fans, Glavine was and will always be a Brave. They’re also demanding Glavine give back all of his 300 wins gifts.

    What a beautiful Sunday.

  77. 77
    Brian J. Says:

Francoeur decides to provide SkyMiles for charity based on the home runs he hits- and he hit 10 fewer HR this year than last year. Therefore, we must conclude that Jeff Francoeur hates children. Or something like that.

Matt Holliday walks. He’s still at. 339713.

  78. 78
    Dan Says:

The Mets’ fans are saying it’s all a big plot and that Tom Glavine is really a Braves and he played with the Mets all these years just to blow this one game on purpose.

  79. 79
    Adam Says:

The ESPN ticker says Delgado broke his hand on that HBP. Wow.

  80. 80
    Mikey@OU Says:

Of course they are. Ever been to a Braves home game and sit next to Mets fans? However, they aren’t quite up to par with Red Sox fans. Those guys are the worst.

    Everyone LOL@ the Mets!

  81. 81
    'Rissa Says:

That is why KJ needs to be at 2nd.

  82. 82
    Brian J. Says:

To paraphrase Ring Lardner, “Although Pete Orr is a very poor fielder, he is a very poor hitter.”

  83. 83
    Sam Says:

Holliday still at .33971, he had a walk.

  84. 84
    SomeYahoo Says:

Chipper needs a hit this inning.

  85. 85
    Brian J. Says:

If you ever happen to see this, Skip, as one of those folks who’ve been watching the Braves from afar lo these many years, “Thank You.”

  86. 86
    Dan Says:

It’s over. No batting title for Chipper this year.

  87. 87
    'Rissa Says:

Dang it. Chipper, I don’t think he has a chance now, does he?

  88. 88
    Sam Says:

Another out. Well, this is no good.

  89. 89
    Sam Says:

Not unless Holliday has an 0-fer bigger than Chippers.

  90. 90
    'Rissa Says:

Thanks Skip. We’ll miss you, too.

  91. 91
    Dan Says:

    Will Chipper get anymore at-bats?

  92. 92
    noah Says:

    Damn straight. Thanks Skip.

  93. 93
    Sam Says:

He should. If Hurdle finds out that Chipper is out of the game, Holliday might be sat too.

  94. 94
    JoeyT Says:

Holliday won’t sit unless the Padres win.

  95. 95
    Brian J. Says:

I doubt that, Sam, seeing that Colorado needs this game to have a shot at the playoffs.

  96. 96
    Sam Says:

Okay. So we know that Holliday is going to stick in there the whole game. Chipper can still get a hit and win the title, even if he gets just one more at-bat. It’s not over yet.

  97. 97
    SomeYahoo Says:

Phils score one more: 4-1. It’s gratifying to know that we’re about to enjoy the Mets slipping into that “greatest collapses of all time” conversation from now to eternity.

  98. 98
    Sam Says:

How fitting: the Braves’ two worst players hitting back-to-back with men in scoring position.

  99. 99
    Mikey@OU Says:

Alright, Chris Woodwards last at bat for the Braves! YAY!

  100. 100
    'Rissa Says:

Why Woodward here? Why not send a real hitter up and give us a chance to not be shut out in our last game?

  101. 101
    Sam Says:

And they both struck out. No surprise.

That story was funny as hell, though.

  102. 102
    Brian J. Says:

Cox just wants to leave one last impression of the 2007 season, and there’s no questioning that it’s an accurate one.

  103. 103
    Ron Says:

Orr then Woodward… possibly the worst sequence of two batters in major league history. Hopefully neither will be back next year.

  104. 104
    Sam Says:

    Holliday’s up.

  105. 105
    Sam Says:

All right! He made an out!

  106. 106
    Brian J. Says:

Matt Holliday flies out to left and falls to .339172.

  107. 107
    Dan Says:

    Holliday now 0-1.

  108. 108
    noah Says:

There’s Otis’ catch. Probably the best ballgame I ever saw. I remember it well.

  109. 109
    Brian J. Says:

Another piece of trivia about that game- the Braves had the fewest possible batters you can bring up in a nine-inning game, 25. The Braves’ only baserunners were David Justice (2nd inning HR) and Jeff Blauser (4th inning walk and caught stealing).

  110. 110
    noah Says:

I remember Van Slyke hitting it…but was Drabek the pitcher for the Pirates?

  111. 111
    Brian J. Says:

Nope. Danny Jackson for 7 innings and Bob Patterson in the 8th.

  112. 112
    'Rissa Says:

Wonder what Andruw’s thinking about this send-off for Biggio…

  113. 113
    Sam Says:

    Yay, it’s Pete!

  114. 114
    'Rissa Says:

There’s Pete. Too bad we didn’t get him the whole game.

  115. 115
    noah Says:

Drabek must’ve been the pitcher in the Bream game?

  116. 116
    'Rissa Says:

    Come on Chipper!!!

  117. 117
    'Rissa Says:

    Dang it.

  118. 118
    Sam Says:

Dang. That’s all. Well, Chipper needs a hit now, over it’s no title for him.

    S***, no title.

  119. 119
    JoeyT Says:

crap. Congrats, Coors Field. You win another batting title.

  120. 120
    Dan Says:

    NOW it’s over.

I’m frankly shocked Chipper Jones fell so flat when he had what he so clearly wanted in his grasp.

  121. 121
    Brian J. Says:

.337232. Holliday would now have to go 0-5 for Chipper to win the batting title.

  122. 122
    Sam Says:

Not unless Holliday goes 0-4 or 0-5, which is VERY unlikely.

  123. 123
    Adam Says:

    @115, yes, he was.

  124. 124
    Remy Says:

Did Chip pass the mic to Pete?

  125. 125
    'Rissa Says:

    No, Pete was on radio.

  126. 126
    Sam Says:

Well, I suppose I’ll go do something else.

  127. 127
    'Rissa Says:

So, how many days have the Phillies been atop of the East this season? Just yesterday and today, right? Braves were there longer, and the Mets were there longest.

  128. 128
    Dan Says:

I dread the offseason, as always.

At least laughing at the Mets will be fun for a little while.

  129. 129
    noah Says:

    Last strike…

  130. 130
    Brian J. Says:

And the Mets go down 8-1.

  131. 131
    Brian J. Says:

    Philly’s two outs away.

  132. 132
    noah Says:

And there it is. Have a good winter, folks. Enjoyed it.

    Congratulations, Phillies.

  133. 133
    Dan Says:

It’s over. Braves 84-78 to finish the year.

    And the METS LOSE!!!!!!!

    Marlins: 8
    Mets: 1

Phillies winning 6-1 against the Nationals still.

  134. 134
    'Rissa Says:

“And that’s the end of Braves TBS baseball.”

    End of an era…

  135. 135
    Brian J. Says:

    Final NL East Standings:

    Phillies 89-73 —
    NY Mess 88-74 1 GB
    Braves 84-78 5 GB
    Nationals 73-89 16 GB
    Marlins 71-91 18 GB

  136. 136
    Ron Says:

For me this is the 2nd best ending to the season other than a Braves World Championship.

  137. 137
    Dan Says:

    Phillies win. It’s over.

  138. 138
    SomeYahoo Says:

That’s it. We’ve endured our two down years. It’s only up from here. The Braves win 95-100 games next year if everyone stays relatively healthy.

I agree Ron. Just about the best result that didn’t include the Braves winning the division.

  139. 139
    Maverick Says:

Well thats it for sports I prolly wont see that much of the braves since TBS wont be showing them anymore!! dang well at least the METS didnt make it guess thats something to cheer for! Go BRAVES 2008

  140. 140
    ByDesign Says:

I’ll miss you, TBS. Thanks for giving me a chance to watch the Braves in all four cities I’ve lived in with announcers who love the Braves.

    (and HA to the Mets!)

  141. 141
    JB Says:

Yeah… definitely one of the better ways to end a season in which we don’t make it to the playoffs.

At least our season lasted a few minutes longer than the Mets…

  142. 142
    Catzrthecoolest Says:

did anyone watch that “tribute” kind of thing at the end?

  143. 143
    Mikey@OU Says:

It’s been good Pete, Joe, Don, Skip and Chip. We’ll miss you guys on TBS!!

  144. 144
    ByDesign Says:

I thought there’d be more to the tribute. Every year they show a montage of highlights while scrolling the credits. The tribute ends and Bloopers come on. Sort of cheap, but I liked the tribute nonetheless.
