Happy International Worker’s Day! Game Thread

The International Workers of the World — the Wobblies — want you to remember who this day is really all about.

Without getting into politics, I think that we can all agree that there is one common enemy here, and that enemy is the FLORIDA MARLINS WHO PLAY IN MIAMI. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country, and their country needs them to defeat and destroy the once and future bottom-dwellers of the NL East. Slash them! Beat them! Bite them! Gnash them! Take them away to dark holes full of snakes, and never let them see the light again!

And I’m listening to some wobbly electronic music while at work. Serendipity.

    DWonder Says:

Apparently “May Day” doubles as “Losers Unite/Occupy Wall Street” day.
Not a good day to be working late at the Fed building in Manhattan

  3. 3
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

One other note is that the call of “Mayday” used by pilots to request help — it isn’t related to the month at all. Many people think it’s related to the French “M’aidez,” which translates to “Help me” and is pronounced “meh-day.”

    I’m on Long Island & we’re dancing.

At my office, the workers control the means of production.

Thanks for the education, Alex. Gaff the Fish.

    Nathan Says:

As a side note, today’s game is’s free game of the day, so I will be watching baseball with my eyes, rather than reading text describing it.

    David O’Brien ‏@ajcbraves 3m

Multiple reports that Chris Johnson has agreed to 3-year extension with Braves. Hearing it’s true, no official word.

    Dwight Lowie Says:

The play at home wasn’t particularly close, but it shouldn’t have even been able to be called a “play at home” were it not for Andrelton showing an absolute hose there. That relay throw was a thing of beauty.

  9. 9
    braves14 Says:

I mean, I know we don’t have much in the system at 3B, but I don’t think Johnson is a long term solution.

    jjschiller Says:

At the game. Apparently you can sit right next to the camera well at the end of tge dugout for $50.

    My view:

Great looking dog you got there, JJ!

    ryan c Says:

A Chris Johnson extension was not what I had in mind for Braves news prior to this game.

La Stella with a single in the 1st inning gives him a 20-game on-base streak.

  13. 13
    jjschiller Says:

Thanks Ryan! She’s the love of my life!

Funny story about her, I brought her to a Braves-Marlins game on Bark at the Park night, and she got us both on TV in the opening sequence.

Heyward sure looked safe to me.

These seats are so good, I didn’t see that ball go over the wall, because Jason blocked my view.

    Freddie ain’t feeling it.

    Freddie’s funking right now.

@jj Cool stuff. I had 2 mutts both white with a black spot on the left eye. One passed about 2 months ago from lymphoma. 2 rounds of chemo and neither took. We still have our 12-year old dalmatian mix, Abby.

  21. 21
    coop Says:

    Ugly, Uggla.

  22. 22
    ryan c Says:

When you need a K? Or a real quick out? Who ya gonna call? DAN UGGLA!

  23. 23
    ububba Says:

    Tonight, Andrelton’s seen 2 pitches & he’s made 3 outs.

  24. 24
    coop Says:

Andrelton, my man, what the heck is going on?

  25. 25
    jjschiller Says:

    Simmons is struggling.

  26. 26
    jjschiller Says:

I think they pipe in crowd noise here. The volume and frequency of the noise before the 2-2 pitch to Stanton was unlike the sound of the crowd at any other time tonight.

  32. 32
    ryan c Says:

Ian Thomas having some bad luck this inning.

  33. 33
    braves14 Says:

    2 pitiful little singles.

  34. 34
    ryan c Says:

    And then lucky…

  35. 35
    'Rissa Says:

I hate the Marlins. How lucky can you get this inning?

  36. 36
    ryan c Says:

Seems odd to incorporate the shift when the pitcher on the mound throws 95-96.

  37. 37
    braves14 Says:

We’re going to get swept by the fugging Marlins.

  38. 38
    Our New Insect Overlords Says:

Thomas: unlucky. Carpenter: still not the answer.

  39. 39
    Smitty Says:

This would have been a better spot for Walden

  40. 40
    coop Says:

Good play, Yelich. On you, CJ.

  41. 41
    Putter Says:

Yet another wasted lead off double

  42. 42
    ryan c Says:

Their LF makes the play. Ours does not. Difference in the game.

  43. 43
    coop Says:

    Okay, Simba, square one up.

  44. 44
    braves14 Says:

Redmond is showing Fredi that you can, in fact, bring a closer in during the 8th inning.

  45. 45
    Smitty Says:

Redman going to his closer in the 8th? Fredi will protest

  46. 46
    coop Says:

Your turn to shine, Ramiro. Be a hero.

  47. 47
    ryan c Says:

Thought for sure it would be Doumit. That’s why he’s here.

  48. 48
    krussell Says:

I hate Atlanta sports. We just can’t ever have nice things.

  49. 49
    Smitty Says:

    Fredi was out managed

  50. 50
    Putter Says:

Difficult to win games when you never get the big hit and fail miserably at executing the little fundamental things that help you manufacture runs

  51. 51
    jjschiller Says:

Why is Doumit on the team if not to hit down 1 with 2 outs in the 8th with the bases loaded?

  52. 52
    Smitty Says:

Why is Walden still not in the game

  53. 53
    krussell Says:

Walden only pitches the 8th inning when we have a lead. Any other use of him is against league rules.

  54. 54
    iceberg584 Says:

They went with Pena because he was already earmarked to play third base. At the very least, it’s questionable strategy considering we were losing with only 4 outs left in the game.

  55. 55
    coop Says:

    Please, Luis, make this easy.

That will do. Now let’s get some runs.

  56. 56
    'Rissa Says:

Getting swept by the Marlins was not exactly what I had in mind for this week. I vote we make up for this by sweeping the Giants.

  57. 57
    Our New Insect Overlords Says:

All the Braves gear hits the washing machine tonight.

  58. 58
    coop Says:

Well, that was futile. Perhaps tomorrow. See you then.

    Putter Says:

God forbid Freeman ever get a day off

  61. 61
    Adam R Says:

Will somebody ever tell us what the terms of the Regression extension are?

    Bah. I hate the Marlins.

  62. 62
    'Rissa Says:

@61 Whatever they were, his performance at the plate tonight shows that he must be happy with them.

  63. 63
    kc Says:

Today is not a good day for Atlanta, and I am not sure if I like a Chris Johnson extension regardless of the amount….

  64. 64
    Adam R Says:

  65. 65
    Johnny Says:

    @64 – Thanks for that.

  66. 66
    MikeM Says:

Read that Uggla piece this morning. His views on “run production” and RBIs as his benchmark for success read as practically Francoeurian.

  67. 67
    sdp Says:

Francoeur posting a sub .600 OPS in AAA.

  68. 68
    Adam R Says:

I admit to being somewhat jealous of people who don’t have to deeply understand what they’re doing in order to succeed at their job. And some of those types of job are even lucrative and rewarding. How galling.

  69. 69
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

Uggla struck me as fairly thoughtful about his strengths and shortcomings, particularly with regard to his OBP. I just disagree with the interviewer, David Laurila, who appears to believe that Uggla isn’t done. I just think he’s done.

  70. 70
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

    Recapped, sorta.
