Scarred, but smarter.

Saturday, Saturday…Let’s walk the line…Braves 6 Fish 5

We had yet another turgid first three innings tonight which did not augur well for what might follow. Stanton hit a beautiful solo screamer to CF but no-one blamed Fried for that. What did disappoint was the  lack of sharpness in his control, the little movement in the air and mediocre velocity. The third inning showed he set them down one, two, three but it was deceptive- two outs were line drives to the outfield and one ground ball rocket to short. Sure enough the fourth caught him out.

With two outs he was yanked with a line of 3.2 IP 6 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, 3k. and we were in familiar trouble. But we came back in fine style right away cutting the deficit to one. Both teams had single runs in the fifth so when we scored another run in the sixth we were level for the first time. Miami were held scoreless by our somewhat erratic pen and so it was until the melodramatic bottom of the 9th when Ender coaxed a bases load walk off walk from a somewhat flummoxed young Miami reliever. We win.

Roll of Honor.

Matt Kemp, defensive play of the game at a crucial moment and doubled off the runner.

Juan Camargo..HR and 3 runs driven in. And Chip stop bitchin’ about his base running goof THREE TIMES later.

Kurt Suzuki   no homers tonight, just three important base hits particularly one  leading off the bottom of the 9th.

Freddie and Ender both had 2 hits and a run driven in, Ender’s being the game winning walk.

Dansby  No hits but 3 important walks, the last one crucial.

Ozzie   only 1 for 5 but it was an important double that scored a run in the 4th inning fight back.

Sims  he did a commendable job coming in early in the 4th when Fried had just been knocked around all over the place. His control, pace and movement all looked better than what had gone before. The pen, two words, see above.

Thanks, balzon. Woke up in time for the bottom of the ninth. Great at-bat there by Dansby.

Preoccupied with the hurricane but still have power so I turned it over to the game exactly three times: Stanton struck out, Kemp made an amazing play, and the bottom of the ninth. Best Braves game all year, as far as I’m concerned.

Yeah, this hurricane’ll be a doozy. Braves gave up 7,300 free tickets to people evacuating the hurricane. Good on them.

Are you out of Florida, Rob?

I know that questioning The Sacrifice Bunt on a baseball blog is a bit like screaming into the void, but the call to have Camargo bunt last night was driving me nuts. Barraclough was demonstrably wild– before Camargo’s AB, Dansby was trying his best to lay down a bunt & give Barraclough the first out, but he couldn’t even find the strike zone well enough for that. so then, first and second, no outs, you’ve got a batter with a homer already on the day, the pitcher is missing his spots by feet– I just didn’t understand giving away the out there. obv. it ended up working out anyhow, so what do I know.

Maybe it’s still a small sample size, but I like Lane Adams. I think he can be a useful bench player and if he has to start for a few weeks while Kemp or Markakis do their regular DL time next year (hopefully our OF will have Acuna and Inciarte playing every day), it should be okay.

We went to a really high point outside of Gainesville, coop. That’s where we have family. Safe and sound. Thanks for asking. Our home in St. Pete, that we just finished renovating, is in a difficult elevation and surge situation. We are not optimistic that we’ll be exempt from a loss, but… we shall see. Go Barves.

South of Jacksonville, I’m blacked out from the Braves. WTF?!

You should be able to get the Marlins though?

For as bad as the Braves have been this year, they are fun to watch in the late innings of late, sometimes…….

    coop Says:

Wouldn’t have given you a nickel for our chances going into the bottom of the ninth, and the top of the eleventh didn’t look so good either. Who’da thunk it?

    joel Says:

Wasn’t that fun watching Lane Adams in that interview? It reminds me of the 80’s when wins were scarce and a win like this felt like a play-off victory!

    tfloyd Says:

Even though this year’s team is going nowhere, what a fun series! Three walk off wins in four games. And the kids played huge roles in each one. Rio with the crucial, two out game tying hit in the ninth today.

Looking back, I wish I had watched more of these games!

    Recapped.

    csg Says:

Lane adams, Jace, and Camargo should help keep Santana off the 25 man next year
