Early Division Series Game Thread: Game Four, Braves at Astros

Let’s just get this over with. I mean, even if we win this one, the Astros will just win Game Five again. I figure, why string it out?

(No, I haven’t given up on the reverse jinx yet.)

    David Remy Says:

I am sick to death of articles like the one filed late yesterday by ESPN’s Jason Stark:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2005/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2185328

Stark doesn’t do this, but have you noticed how no one compares the Braves to the Buffalo Bills anymore? They compare the Braves to . . . the Atlanta Braves! The Braves need a win today, and badly.

If the Braves hope to win today, Furcal and Giles have to get on. Hudson has to keep the ball down. Pitch Biggio away or else he ends up at second base.

    Go, Braves!

    Kirk Says:

Houston has scored 18 runs. Of those, 9 have scored in just 2 innings, and that has been the difference in the series. And everyone here knows what those two innings have in common. We can win today if Hudson is effective AND economical. R, F, and D (I won’t use their names any more) need to stay nailed to the bench. It would also help if the top of the order remembered how to get on base.

    Kirk Says:

The “Bullpen Struggles Continue” article on the Braves mlb site bothers me more than what any columnist has to say. I guess I’m expecting something along the lines of “I’m paid to get people out and I’m not getting it done. I need to get ahead in the count, and I need to miss some bats” instead of “I’m unlucky, hopefully my luck will change”. Seems pretty pathetic to me.

    fjensen Says:

Braves could still win it but my managerial criticism starts with Reitsma who has been overused for someone who has shown the propensity to blow games. Why keep Thompson and HoRa on the roster if you are not going to use them. He seems to do this every playoff.

    Stu Says:

Responding to some things from last night’s post-game thread:

Disliking Pettitte is really indefensible. I mean, it’s fine to cheer against him–that’s what you should do, since he’s not on your team. But the man is–by absolutely all accounts–a truly great guy. Teammates always love him, he’s always active in the community, he’s a big game pitcher who doesn’t show up the opposing hitters or act stupidly (like throwing broken bats at hitters). By all accounts, he’s the equivalent of John Smoltz.

I don’t think you can say Chris Reitsma sucks, because it’s not like anybody ever hits the ball hard off of him. That said, however, he gives up way too much contact and too many hits. It’s been said before–if you’re pitching to contact on every batter, some of those swings become hits. I still think he’s incredibly unlucky, but he’s been ineffective, and it’s time to stop using him.

I have nothing against Joey Devine, either. But I’d stop bringing him in with multiple runners on base. He’s a guy you could use to start an inning I think, but Bobby continues to bring him into situations where he’s set up to fail.

Matthew, I don’t think it’s fair to say Bobby knows more about baseball than any of us do. We all know Jordan sucks and Bobby doesn’t. We all know Estrada can’t hit nearly as well as McCann. We all know McBride should be used instead of Foster. That’s your evidence, right there. He knows how to handle his players, yes, but to give him a free pass because he’s a manager and we aren’t and therefore he must be a baseball genius is silly and wrong.

Stark says in that article that there’s no way Smoltz comes back to start on 3 days rest in a game 5. I’d start Thomson today. But I know I’m alone on that one.

  6. 6
    David Remy Says:

Like I mentioned in the previous thread, it’s like Bobby holds certain players in reserve for situations that will never arise (i.e., extra innings) because the players he does put in can’t get the job done. What’s he waiting for? Christmas? Why, for example, ignore Franco’s–or Betemit’s, for that matter–success as a pinch hitter if that’s why he’s on the roster in the first place? Why, as Alex R. pointed out, ignore McBride’s ability to get outs when he’s proven himself against some of the league’s premier power hitters? Does the fact that this is a division series negate the old saw that you have to play for a win while on the road? I’m just as flummoxed as the rest of you. I just don’t get it.

  7. 7
    JB Says:

    Mac,

How bout you get “trade Furcal” back up on the banner. We need some luck today…

    JB

  8. 8
    JB Says:

One other thing. Bobby is almost certain to go back to Estrada today b/c of the day game following night game thing. This is bad news but to a degree understandable.

However, if Brian Jordan trots out to leftfield I will be watching football this afternoon with the understanding that Bobby Cox is the worst post season manager in the history of baseball.

  9. 9
    fjensen Says:

Betemit has proved himself this year I hope he sees some action today.

  10. 10
    Bobby Says:

With Hudson going today against Backe, and no Smoltz for a possible game five, I’d almost rather lose today and just get this over with, than have to go home and drop another series at Turner Field. There is no way Thomson outpitches Petitte.

  11. 11
    Mike Says:

What are the chances Bobby uses Thomson in relief instead of the other guys.

  12. 12
    David Remy Says:

This is where Hampton picked the Braves up last year.

  13. 13
    Krugerindustrialsmoothing Says:

The question I have is that if smoltz can’t go for game 5 anyways (Cox & Smoltz have both said so) then you are going to have to go with either Thompson or Ramirez and pray you picked the right one. This holds whether it’s game 4 or 5. So that being said, why not take your medicine today and come back with Hudson on full rest? also, if Hudson doesn’t have it, we’ll have to burn the bullpen early, if by some miracle, we live through that, no pen for game 5. I just think the pitching order sets us up to lose.

  14. 14
    jenny Says:

Thomson or Ramirez against Andy Pettitte…I’m going to go cry now.

  15. 15
    David Remy Says:

It’s the lesser of two evils, really. If Ramirez must pitch, then I would rather it be at Turner Field, where there’s at least a chance of the ball staying in the park.

  16. 16
    Krugerindustrialsmoothing Says:

Point taken Dave, also, why has no one talked at all about that joke of a tricked up outfield in the juicebox, odd angles to try and manufacture a homefield advantage is one thing, but the jogs and hills in the juice box are a complete joke, and dangerous to boot.

I think the crew at the Ted should start digging tiger traps into the outfield, covering them with grass and only telling our guys where the holes are, that should even it out some. Picture this, “tavaraz racing over to make the grab and….HE’S DISSAPPEARED, furcal races for home. tough break for the stro’s there.”

even then we still have to get to monday

  17. 17
    jenny Says:

Well, McCann is in the projected starting lineup, but who knows how accurate that is. My bet is that McCann will be in the lineup today and if we win, Estrada will catch tomorrow because of Bobby’s fixation on the righty-lefty thing. Even though Estrada can’t hit from the right side of the plate and did nothing against Pettitte last time, who are we to buck tradition? Of course we don’t want to kill McCann, but if we don’t advance, he’ll have the whole offseason to rest anyway.

As for even entertaining the thought of HoHum pitching this game, NO. Lefty meatball pitcher in bandbox park against right-handed power hitting third baseman with multiple runners on base due to walks in an elimination game? No thanks.

  18. 18
    David Remy Says:

I just listened to Stravinsky’s “Sacrificial Dance” from The Rite of Spring. I think I’m ready for today’s game.

  19. 19
    jenny Says:

Another bad thought: Francoeur is probably going to have a gigantic bruise on his left arm from where that pitch walloped him yesterday. Let’s hope it doesn’t affect him.

  20. 20
    Stu Says:

Yeah, we sure wouldn’t want him to stop hitting. Wait…he hasn’t hit even with a healthy hand? What’s going to change?

  21. 21
    the mac pack Says:

this sucks…we don’t have a prayer today b/c we will pull all that stupid theory crap…day game after night game= NO MCCANN, B.J in leftfield= runners in scoring position score on anything hit to him AND at least two guaranteed strikeouts for Backe

  22. 22
    jenny Says:

On the off chance, Stu, that he might hit, it would be nice.

Of course, if it hurts to swing, maybe he’ll be more patient and only swing at good pitches. It could be a blessing in disguise.

    Ah, who am I kidding?

  23. 23
    Smitty Says:

Here is why we don’t win in October.

    Bobby panics.

That is it right there, no way around it. He would pinch hit me for Ryan because I am right handed and I have more of an advatage. If we loose a game in the playoffs he puckers his ass up and makes huge changes.
Durring the regualar season he is laid back and that is why we win. He panics in October too much.
He doesn’t walk the bases loaded in the regular season in the first inning, why start now?

The pen moves last night were just panic moves. I am not worried Huddy will look good today and Smoltz will dominate on Monday (we all know he is going to start)

  24. 24
    jenny Says:

Lineup according to Yahoo! Sports is exactly the same as yesterday.

  25. 25
    Kirk Says:

While you hope that Thomson pitches well, you have to allow for the possibility that he will have to be pulled early, which in game 4 would mean that HR comes in, and nobody wants that in Minute Maid. If Thomson falters in game 5, at least you may have Smoltz for a few innings, and there is more margin for error with HR at home. Hudson on short rest is the right call IMO.

  26. 26
    James Says:

McCann is in the starting lineup!

  27. 27
    Smitty Says:

    1. R Furcal, SS .284 12 58 46
    2. M Giles, 2B .291 15 63 16
    3. C Jones, 3B .296 21 72 5
    4. A Jones, CF .263 51 128 5
    5. A LaRoche, 1B .259 20 78 0
    6. J Francoeur, RF .300 14 45 3
    7. R Langerhans, LF .267 8 42 0
    8. B McCann, C .278 5 23 1
    9. T Hudson, P .138 0 6 0

  28. 28
    jenny Says:

    The lineup:

    R. Furcal
    M. Giles
    C. Jones
    A. Jones
    A. LaRoche
    J. Francoeur
    R. Langerhans
    B. McCann
    T. Hudson

  29. 29
    jenny Says:

    Smitty and I think alike.

  30. 30
    Smitty Says:

    no Jordan!

  31. 31
    Dix Says:

1-3 are gonna get on base today for Andruw, who will continue to have a hot bat.

  32. 32
    kc Says:

We will see Jordan and Estrada if there is a game 5. I am not holding any hope (I am going with the reverse jinx as well). I had my support on Reitsma, but Bobby can’t continue to test his luck with a guy who is definitely cursed. If I see Reitsma again within the next two games, I am staging a boycott on Bobby.

Mac, I can’t believe you took off the “Trade Furcal” banner down…that was what gotten the Braves started in June…can’t believe the banner is so powerful…

  33. 33
    JoeyT Says:

God, this NFL pregame sucks. Why would anyone watch this (unless tuning in five minutes early for a baseball playoff game)?

  34. 34
    kc Says:

Is it going to be another 30-minute delay again on the game starting time?

  35. 35
    kc Says:

    Guess not.

  36. 36
    Stu Says:

Furcal set the tone that inning. Swinging for a homerun on the first pitch of the game. This is gonna be a long day.

  37. 37
    Stu Says:

JoeyT, you mean you don’t like listening to Michael Irvin chuckle ignorantly, after making incoherent statements? I don’t understand. I wonder if he’s still on crack.

  38. 38
    Kirk Says:

Good start for Hudson. Houston was just as impatient as we were.

  39. 39
    David Remy Says:

Andruw is totally in the zone. He’s carrying the team once again.

  40. 40
    Kirk Says:

AJ has been on fire!! Too bad Furcal-Giles-Chipper have not.Not a good time for the old LaRoche to make an appearance.

  41. 41
    JoeyT Says:

    That strike zone is gigantic.

  42. 42
    Stu Says:

Is that Eric Gregg behind the plate?

At least Backe had to throw some pitches this inning.

Somebody has to step up and help Andruw out. Francoeur is really starting to get on my nerves.

  43. 43
    kc Says:

    Eric Gregg II.

  44. 44
    JoeyT Says:

Furcal’s had a nice at bat. A gazillion pitches and no out.

    WEAR THIS GUY OUT

  45. 45
    JoeyT Says:

I think the ump’s tightened the zone. I see Backe throw the same pitch he threw an inning ago for a strike now called a ball. Maybe I’m just misremembering.

  46. 46
    Kirk Says:

2 on for AJ, this is where he needs to come through.

  47. 47
    JoeyT Says:

    ANDRUW HIT BY PITCH!

The Astros are so dead now.

  48. 48
    Kirk Says:

Wow, now its up to LaRoche. Let’s see the new improved model, please.

  49. 49
    Mac Thomason Says:

    You suck, LaRoche!

    (Just for old times’ sake.)

  50. 50
    Stu Says:

That’s it. NOBODY here ever says another negative word about Rochey.

  51. 51
    Kirk Says:

That’s it baby, make him pay!!!

  52. 52
    David Remy Says:

Way to take one for the team, Andruw! I like our chances now after that HBP.

  53. 53
    JoeyT Says:

I TAKE BACK EVERY THING I EVER SAID ABOUT LAROCHE

    GAME FIVE COMING UP, BABY

  54. 54
    Garbanzo Says:

    Holy Crap

  55. 55
    urlhix Says:

    Unbelieveable!

  56. 56
    Mike Clay Says:

    He sucks!!!!! Trade him now!!!!

  57. 57
    David Remy Says:

    Salami!

  58. 58
    kc Says:

    ADAM IS MY NEW HERO!!!

  59. 59
    Stu Says:

You’re right about the tightening of the zone, JoeyT. He started LaRoche with the same breaking ball off the plate that was called strike 2 against him in his first at bat.

  60. 60
    Frank Says:

    Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! STFU, Houston crowd!

  61. 61
    kc Says:

How about that? Game tying three run homerun in last year’s game 4, and grand slam in this year’s playoff. There is something about Adam…

  62. 62
    Mike Clay Says:

I’ve been saying that for months kc. I’m glad some people are coming around ;)

  63. 63
    Frank Says:

Somebody had got to come up with a big hit someday. Let’s hope 4 runs is enough.

  64. 64
    atlinl.a. Says:

Is it wrong to be greedy and ask for four more?

  65. 65
    JoeyT Says:

Looks like Bobby made the right call with Hudson.

  66. 66
    Kirk Says:

Pitch counts through 3: Backe 55, Hudson 36. Hudson looks really sharp so far. Let’s knock Backe around a bit more, shall we?

  67. 67
    David Remy Says:

Way for Hudson to come back and strike out Biggio a second time after falling behind 3-0.

  68. 68
    kc Says:

Well, Mike, his slow August was very disappointing. I would still say Adam’s second season has been a disappointment, but his grand slam has just bought me another year of patience with Adam.

  69. 69
    Mike Clay Says:

Sophomore slump. Happens alot. I still think he will be a fine player. We’ll see.

  70. 70
    jenny Says:

Mike is having an affair with LaRoche. He told me so on AIM.

  71. 71
    JoeyT Says:

That was a great catch. The entire team is so on today.

  72. 72
    jenny Says:

And he’s going to kill me when he reads this ;-)

  73. 73
    Kirk Says:

Big, big play by AJ. Pitch counts through 4: Backe 66, Hudson 45.

  74. 74
    kc Says:

This is the Hudson we have been waiting for the whole season!!!

  75. 75
    Frank Says:

Wow, that was a big inning. Hudson looks GREAT. Should always pitch on three days rest, I guess.

BTW, who said Smoltzie cannot go in game 5? Guess I missed that.

  76. 76
    Kirk Says:

Good start, Marcus and Chipper. Let’s see if we can knock Backe out right here.

  77. 77
    Mike Clay Says:

You’re just jealous because Adam is sexier than B-Rob, Jennygirl ;)

    hah

  78. 78
    Mac Thomason Says:

Andruw didn’t get a hit with runners in scoring position. Obviously, he sucks.

  79. 79
    atlinl.a. Says:

It would be so nice not to agonize for the rest of this game. 4 runs is not enough with our bullpen. How many pitches could Hudson effectively throw on 3 days rest?

  80. 80
    jenny Says:

Oh, I think Mike’s jealous of BRob! Sorry, Mike, you’ll have to compete for my affections.

  81. 81
    kc Says:

Yeah, Mac, I agree with you, it’s all Andruw’s fault.

  82. 82
    Kirk Says:

This could not be going any better. 4.2 innings of Houston’s BP coming up with a game tomorrow. Hudson looking as sharp as he has all season, and on pace to go at least 8. Could not ask for anything more.

  83. 83
    Mac Thomason Says:

Like Babe Ruth would ever drink a light beer. Not exactly a calorie counter, the Babe.

  84. 84
    Frank Says:

I have a question that’s probably kinda stupid, but anyway: If you were Berkman and you had to catch Andruw’s flyball, no chance to throw Furcal out, do you still catch the ball and make it a sac fly, or do you let it drop for strike one?

  85. 85
    Kirk Says:

LaRoche giveth, and LaRoche taketh away. I guess I’ll forgive him.

  86. 86
    kc Says:

Hey, Bobby, pinch hit Langarhans with Jordan now!!!

  87. 87
    JoeyT Says:

Good question, Frank. I think you have to let it drop. It’s just so automatic, no one thinks about it.

It’s not like that situation comes up much anymore, with the inch and a half of foul territory in most parks.

  88. 88
    atlinl.a. Says:

I’ve always wondered about that…not to get all historical here, but the same thing happened in the epic Reds-Red Sox Game 6 in the ’75 WS. George Foster caught a deep fly ball in foul territory and threw out the runner at the plate (it would’ve been the winning run). It seemed like a really risky move. I guess ballplayers would rather go for it than swallow their pride and let a catchable ball drop.

  89. 89
    kc Says:

I think Berkman was too tired running that inning to think about your question.

  90. 90
    Mike Clay Says:

That seals it. Smoltzie will start tommorrow.

  91. 91
    Kirk Says:

I think I disagree with that one in this situation. You don’t give AJ another chance to hurt you even worse.

  92. 92
    atlinl.a. Says:

Brief aside about football: The Falcons’ punter/kickoff guy just kicked a 58-yard field goal.

  93. 93
    Mike Clay Says:

    Go Eagles!

  94. 94
    jenny Says:

I thought Bobby and John said he couldn’t pitch. Maybe not?

  95. 95
    jay319 Says:

Anyone hear the talking head on TV (Sutcliff?) talking about Smoltz’s shoulder? Doesn’t sound good.

  96. 96
    Mike Says:

Braves website says Ramirez is starting if theres a game 5.

  97. 97
    Mike Clay Says:

Well, Smoltz made it seem like he will be ready. Based on what Rick said, I now am not so sure. I guess we will see.

  98. 98
    Mike Clay Says:

But, we should probably stop getting ahead of ourselves…

  99. 99
    atlinl.a. Says:

Don’t forget: HoRam 8-1, 3.59 ERA at Turner Field this season.

Of course, Sosa was 9-0 on the road before yesterday.

  100. 100
    jenny Says:

Can we get through this game before we start speculating? I feel like we’re jinxing it.

  101. 101
    kc Says:

That’s very good damage control right there!

  102. 102
    atlinl.a. Says:

I don’t have cable, so I’m “watching” via MLB.com Gameday.

Can I tell you how agonizing it is to see the words “in play, run scoring play” appear? You don’t know if it’s a single run on a groundout (like this time) or a grand slam. You just have to wait for it to be posted.

  103. 103
    Kirk Says:

That was big to get out of that mess with only 1 run scoring. Through 5, Hudson is at 62 pitches. He could still conceivably go 8, but 7 is more probable.

  104. 104
    kc Says:

I agree with Jenny, I don’t feel like talking about another game before today’s game is finished.

  105. 105
    Mac Thomason Says:

Could have been worse. Still, only five innings down and the 2-3-4 hitters coming up. Six or seven more runs couldn’t hurt if we have to go to the pen soon.

  106. 106
    atlinl.a. Says:

What Game 5? Season ends today. It’s over. We’ve got no chance.

    How’s that?

  107. 107
    David Remy Says:

Hudson can make his pitches because the Braves are playing great defense behind him. Go, Langerhans!

  108. 108
    Mike Says:

Yea seriously, we have no chance at winning this game.

  109. 109
    jenny Says:

Wow, fan interference double for Hudson. Yikes.

  110. 110
    David Remy Says:

Not with the way our pitchers are hitting. First Sosa, now Hudson. What’s the world coming to?

  111. 111
    JoeyT Says:

That’s a poor call. Hudson shouldn’t have been awarded second.

    I’ll take it, though.

  112. 112
    Mac Thomason Says:

Simple rule: if your fan interferes, you don’t get any benefit of the doubt. It’s your own fault. Shut up, Sutcliffe.

  113. 113
    Stu Says:

Sutcliffe’s comments about Smoltz’s shoulder are certainly cause for worry.

Sutcliffe is also very stupid. He said something along the lines of: “Tim Hudson is pitching around Ausmus because he thinks the pitcher is going to hit next, but I can tell you that Mike Gallo won’t be hitting. It’s probably that he spent so many years in the American Leauge, he’s conditioned to relax with the 9th place hitter coming up.”

First of all, there’s no way Hudson assumes Gallo was hitting next. Second of all, his second point makes no sense. If anything, pitching in the AL would lead a pitcher to be more, not less, cautious with the 8th place hitter, since he’s not used to pitchers batting.

And I’m going to go ahead and agree with the decision to start HR tomorrow if there is a tomorrow. It’s in Atlanta and at night, as somebody pointed out. Also, the last time he was bumped from the rotation, when he came back, he pitched a gem. I have a feeling he’s feeling a little shafted again, and he might give us a gutsy (and hopefully good) performance. All of this is pure speculation…I just can’t help but hope.

  114. 114
    Jeff Says:

Some insurance here would be helpful…

  115. 115
    jenny Says:

I have an idea of why fans may not want to come to games in Atlanta: if they’re really charging $30 for parking, I wouldn’t go either. That’s completely ridiculous.

  116. 116
    Jeff Says:

    Crap!

  117. 117
    kc Says:

    Way to go Chip…

  118. 118
    Stu Says:

Where is the parking 30 dollars? I always pay 10.

Also, would anyone be against bringing Betemit in to play third? If he doesn’t hit, well, he’s no worse than Chipper. And at least he’ll play some defense.

  119. 119
    JoeyT Says:

Where did you get $30? It’s $15 for the lots right by the park, and there’s some kind of shuttle service from the Ampitheatre for $5.

  120. 120
    Frank Says:

Oh boy. Hope that’s not going to hurt us.

Oh, and according to Sutcliff, Bobby wins 10 games a year on his own, “outmanaging” the other manager. Shut up, Rick, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

  121. 121
    kc Says:

    Let’s take care of today’s game first…

  122. 122
    jenny Says:

I heard from someone who went to game 2 that they were charged $30 for parking at Turner Field. If that’s true, someone should be arrested.

  123. 123
    JoeyT Says:

Stu, it’s usually $10, but they up it to $15 for the playoffs, and it’s pre-purchase only.

  124. 124
    Stu Says:

What do you mean? I mean bring in Betemit immediately, to help us win this game.

  125. 125
    Stu Says:

Thanks, JoeyT. Your friend should do more research before parking, jenny.

  126. 126
    jenny Says:

Maybe he took two cars? That would be dumb. Unless he had like 10 people.

  127. 127
    David Remy Says:

According to Don, Hudson is averaging about twelve pitches per inning.

  128. 128
    Mac Thomason Says:

Yeah, Rick, then we bring them back when they’re completely done, like Jordan.

  129. 129
    kc Says:

    You are funny Mac.

  130. 130
    David Remy Says:

Good AB for Andruw, despite the out.

  131. 131
    atlinl.a. Says:

Andruw’s hitting only .615 for the series?
    Slacker.

  132. 132
    Mac Thomason Says:

Somebody please hire Fredi Gonzales to manage.

  133. 133
    Mike Clay Says:

    terrible baserunning

  134. 134
    Frank Says:

What the F**CK was Gonzalez thinkin’ waving him? That’s LAROCHE running, not the f***imng Carl LEwis.

  135. 135
    JoeyT Says:

They keep on touting Tavares’ first base sprint time. I wonder what LaRoche’s is. That would be good comedy.

  136. 136
    kc Says:

    Fredi is legally blinded.

  137. 137
    Mike Clay Says:

Wow. Tom Brady just threw the highest pass ever and it dropped 55 yards down field in Bethel Johnson’s arms. Perfect touch.

  138. 138
    JoeyT Says:

    Dear Marlins fan lurkers,

Yes, your future manager just sent LaRoche to a certain out for no real reason.

I write this to you knowing you don’t exist, as the Marlins have no fans during football season.

    Sincerely,

    JoeyT

  139. 139
    Mac Thomason Says:

Sutcliffe, LaRoche was hustling. He’s just really, really slow.

  140. 140
    jenny Says:

Tom Brady is someone else you’re going to have to compete with, Mike.

  141. 141
    Stu Says:

Yeah, Sutcliffe is making me mad. That’s as fast as LaRoche gets. It’s on Gonzalez that he waved him home. Just really, really stupid. Did you see Cox’s glare at Gonzalez?

I think Sutcliffe needs to publicly apologize to Adam LaRoche the way I did to Alex R.

  142. 142
    Mike Clay Says:

Wow. Andruw tripped and fell in center and it didn’t include the damn hill…

  143. 143
    jenny Says:

Yay, double play. Time for more runs.

  144. 144
    Mac Thomason Says:

So, what do you think? Is LaRoche the slowest non-catcher, non-pitcher in the National League?

  145. 145
    kc Says:

Very important double play, that let Hudson to go for another inning with 81 pitches after seven!

  146. 146
    Mac Thomason Says:

    Boom!

  147. 147
    jenny Says:

Here’s a challenge: say “Wandy Rodriguez” three times fast.

    I keep saying Wandy Wodweeguez.

  148. 148
    Mike Says:

    MCCANN!!!!

  149. 149
    basil Says:

    SWEET!!!!!!!!

  150. 150
    kc Says:

I want to see a race between LaRoche and Estrada.

  151. 151
    Mike Clay Says:

Anyone named Wandy deserves to give up at least one homer.

  152. 152
    Mac Thomason Says:

I am going to write a song about Wandy Rodriguez, but I don’t know if it will be to the tune of “Windy” or “Mandy”.

  153. 153
    jenny Says:

Like I said. Time for more runs. Thanks, Brian.

  154. 154
    David Remy Says:

Don was saying that LaRoche should have been watching Gonzalez instead of the ball, and that this is what cost him at the plate.

    Go, McCann!

  155. 155
    David Remy Says:

I vote for “Windy.” More lyric possibilities.

  156. 156
    kc Says:

Bobby, McCann can hit lefties, so can Langerhans. If I see Estrada and Jordan again, I will stage a boycott on Bobby.

  157. 157
    Jason Says:

Can someone help me out because I’m starting to feel crazy. Didn’t Hudson start Wed. afternoon and isn’t Wed. to Sun. 4 DAYS rest. I keep hearing them say he is pitching on 3 days rest. Wed-Thur. (1 day) Thur.-Friday (2 days) Friday-Sat. (3 days) Sat.-Sun. (4 days!!)

  158. 158
    jenny Says:

Marcus was not thrown out by Ausmus. The ball hit him and he was automatically out. Get it straight.

At least the radio people aren’t calling him “Brian Giles” unlike certain people whose last names start with “Sut” and end with “cliffe.”

  159. 159
    David Remy Says:

Well, at least they stopped talking about the balk.

  160. 160
    Mac Thomason Says:

    Let’s see…

Who’s coming in to pitch the eighth inning?
Throwing a pitch that McCann hammers fair?
Who’s bending down with dismay at a homer?
    Everyone knows it’s Wandy!

Not very good, but it’s a start.

  161. 161
    JoeyT Says:

Jason, what you mention is a pet peeve of the one and only Don Sutton.

I think they just mean three days off. Like three days rest beyond what he would get if he pitched every day.

  162. 162
    Mike Clay Says:

Well, he pitched Wednesday. So, that wouldn’t be considered a day of rest. He rested on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

  163. 163
    David Remy Says:

No, man. You’re on it. The lyrics suit the melody, which is what I meant to say earlier.

  164. 164
    JoeyT Says:

Mac, I think Nick Johnson might be slower than LaRoche. I’d also think of Bagwell, Thome, and Klesko as candidates.

I guess I could calculate speed scores or something, but I’m lazy.

  165. 165
    JoeyT Says:

Farnsworth out. Bobby takes no chances here.

  166. 166
    David Remy Says:

Is Bobby going to pull him?

  167. 167
    kc Says:

Great job Tim, you are the man!

  168. 168
    JoeyT Says:

I thought they showed Farnsworth walking out on TV, unless I saw something wrong.

  169. 169
    kc Says:

    Yeah, Farnsworth is coming in.

  170. 170
    David Remy Says:

No, you’re right, JoeyT. Farnsworth’s coming in, but there’s no need to throw Biggio a fastball. Sliders from here on out.

  171. 171
    Jason Says:

Thanks. That makes sense. I just think that if it has been about 96 hours since you last pitched that should count as four days.

Wandy might require an orchestral work to fully capture his linguistic beauty.

  172. 172
    JoeyT Says:

He was off the bag. Good call.

  173. 173
    David Remy Says:

What about a pizzicato section for the bridge? Something snappy and crisp (unlike Wandy’s pitches).

  174. 174
    David Remy Says:

    Another blown call.

  175. 175
    jenny Says:

Okay, I’m on radio and I blanked out for a minute and now I’m lost. Who’s pitching, who’s on base, who’s at bat? How many outs? What inning?

    Sorry.

  176. 176
    Mike Clay Says:

Farnsworth, loaded, Berkman, 1 out, 8th

  177. 177
    David Remy Says:

Bases loaded. Berkman at the plate. How many out?

  178. 178
    Mike Clay Says:

okay. bases empty. 6-5 braves. ugh.

  179. 179
    Clark Says:

Announcer’s jinx once again. Friggin’ grand slam! Crap.

  180. 180
    Mac Thomason Says:

I do not believe this crap.

  181. 181
    mathew f. Says:

    absurd

  182. 182
    JoeyT Says:

Shake it off, Kyle. It’s still a one run game with the Braves best reliever on the mound. Keep perspective.

  183. 183
    Mike Clay Says:

Okay. So who the hell is going to save this now? Joey?

  184. 184
    Joel Barrett Says:

It’s been 4 days since he last pitched. He had 3 days rest. It’s not the same thing.

“Days rest” is just another way of saying “days off since he last pitched”. If you go to work on both Monday and Tuesday, would you say that you had a day off in between?

  185. 185
    Alex R. Says:

I am now on line and I can’t believe this shit.

How huge is McCann’s home run now. Thank God for that.

  186. 186
    David Remy Says:

A 335 ft. grand slam. Ridiculous.

  187. 187
    jenny Says:

When was the last time two grand slams were hit in one playoff game?

  188. 188
    mathew f. Says:

    That stadium is a joke.

  189. 189
    Alex R. Says:

    That’s a HUGE strikeout.

I am sure it’s already been talked about online today but Thomson vs. Pettitte tomorrow…series is over for us tomorrow. I think we are prolonging the inevitable with Smoltz out.

Hell, with the LaRoche home run today, it’s IDENTICAL to last years’ 1st round series.

By the way, what was said on here today abnout LaRoche’s piece of shit basrunning? I hope he got ripped hard for his LACK OF HUSTLE

  190. 190
    James Says:

    I’m crying…this is unbelievable

  191. 191
    David Remy Says:

Buck up, James. It ain’t over yet.

Who’s coming up for the Braves in the top of the ninth?

  192. 192
    JoeyT Says:

Alex R., the Braves site is reporting HR for tomorrow.

And, really, the LaRoche thing was the fault of the third base coach. How can he not know Adam’s as slow as molasses?

  193. 193
    basil Says:

Why did Bobby bring in Julio, do you think? Defensive reasons, or sitting LaRoche? I think Adam would have handled that throw from Chipper. . .

  194. 194
    Alex R. Says:

Yes, but if we do make it back to Atlanta tomorrow, it won’t matter with freaking Thomson having to face a normally rested Pettitte on the mound.

what’s worse? Bobby you KNOW will bench McCann and Langerhans tomorrow against Pettitte. If Bobby does that he deserves to be run over by an 18 wheeler. Anyway who disagrees is just wrong.

  195. 195
    putter Says:

What a garbage ball park. Opposite field fly ball granny followed by a fly ball near tie game homer. What a complete joke

  196. 196
    kc Says:

What a shitty inning, but the Braves still have a lead…

  197. 197
    Kirk Says:

If you look back at the stats, the one area Farnz has been somewhat vulnerable since joining the Braves is the long ball. Most of his others have been solo jobs (he usually starts an inning, so having runners on base is not typical).

  198. 198
    mathew f. Says:

Why did Bobby pull Laroche? He wasnt making a point in this game at this time.

  199. 199
    Mike Clay Says:

Saying Bobby cox needs to be hit by a truck after the amazing job he has done over the years is a pathetic comment. Anyone who disagrees is just wrong.

  200. 200
    jenny Says:

Saying ANYBODY needs to be hit by a truck is kind of pathetic, but I concur with the feeling, Alex: if I see Brian Jordan and Johnny Estrada in that lineup tomorrow I will break something.

  201. 201
    Alex R. Says:

    Mike,

I loook at gthe utterly shit job he’s done in the playoffs. And I am angry so let me VENT.

Cox probably pulled LaRoche for that garbage effort LaRoche gave around the basepaths.

  202. 202
    Mike Clay Says:

Yea, I’m not really sure why he would do that, especially since LaRoche won’t be starting tomm. Maybe it was the lazy running or maybe he hurt himself.

  203. 203
    Alex R. Says:

    Jenny,

i was venting…I am very complimentary of you so you don’t need to call me pathetic…I am angrily venting…let me vent.

And no one can defend Cox’s managing job.

And will every one on here not be furious if there’s a Game 5 and Jordan/Estrada are playing ahead of Langerhans/McCann?

God, people, just let me vent here. I am not serious OBVIOUSLY however I am angry at Cox.

  204. 204
    Mike Says:

Farnsworth needs to nut up right here.

  205. 205
    Mike Clay Says:

I think someone needs to calm himself :)

…and how do you figure that no one can defend the managing job of Bobby over the years? That’s ridiculous.

  206. 206
    JoeyT Says:

Mike, I don’t even know what that means, but I agree.

  207. 207
    Kirk Says:

You can’t blame Cox for what has happened in this game. He tried to get Hudson through the 8th, and pulled him for our best reliever when he got in some trouble. Some less than stellar defense and a cheap granny got Houston back in it. The bottom of their order is up, hopefully we get through it.

  208. 208
    Piers Says:

You’ve got to figure that Smoltz will be coming out of the bullpen tomorrow.

  209. 209
    Alex R. Says:

    Kirk,

Read my earlier comments…I was talking about Cox’s overall job in this series and his job in Octobers past.

    Mike:

I was speaking about Cox’s BS in the collective Octobers…thats’ what I am talking about.

  210. 210
    Mac Thomason Says:

Alex, please. Sit down. Drink some water. It’s not that bad.

  211. 211
    JoeyT Says:

Alex! I can’t believe you would call for the death of another human being! Seeing as you were being absolutely serious, and that this is a forum for grave, emotionless discussion, I have no choice but to condemn you for your call to murder!

  212. 212
    James Says:

    one to go

    come on

  213. 213
    David Remy Says:

Message to Chip: Palmeiro already PH.

  214. 214
    JoeyT Says:

    Home Run? NO FUCKING WAY

  215. 215
    Mike Clay Says:

    no
    way

  216. 216
    Alex R. Says:

    oh my god.

  217. 217
    ermoore Says:

    . . . . . . .

  218. 218
    Mac Thomason Says:

    Okay. Now it’s that bad.

  219. 219
    David Remy Says:

    Tie game.

  220. 220
    urlhix Says:

    F*ckin’ Hell….

  221. 221
    Piers Says:

So how much did they pay to hire these umpires?

  222. 222
    Kirk Says:

Too freaking incredible for words. A 2-out homer to Brad freaking Ausmus. Un-freaking-believable.

  223. 223
    Alex R. Says:

Fine I am really upset about this and I am sorry for the truck remark. I will just leave now. I am just really heartbroken and angry right now.

  224. 224
    mathew f. Says:

    Forget this.

  225. 225
    steel211 Says:

I cant believe what I just witnessed. How can we be that unlucky…

  226. 226
    Mike Clay Says:

    you gotta love our bullpen.

  227. 227
    JoeyT Says:

That was NOT a home run.

I was kidding about the truck thing, Alex. I was being sarcastic because it’s an internet message board and overstatement really isn’t a big deal.

  228. 228
    mathew f. Says:

Explain how that wasnt a homer, i cant see it.

  229. 229
    kc Says:

That stadium is a complete fucking joke.

  230. 230
    David Remy Says:

If we lose this game, LaRoche’s baserunning will go down in history with that of Lonnie “Skates” Smith.

  231. 231
    urlhix Says:

Some people just don’t get hyperbole, Alex. Don’t sweat it. Your venting makes me feel better.

  232. 232
    JoeyT Says:

I was wrong. It was. In real time, it looked below the line.

  233. 233
    Steffen Says:

I don’t believe this. Brad f’n Ausmus. I just want to beat the crap out of those f’n umps.

  234. 234
    Mac Thomason Says:

It wasn’t a homer in any normal ballpark. Neither was the grand slam. I hate that they’re allowed to pull this crap.

  235. 235
    putter Says:

I’m done. I have had enough of this junk. As a Michigan fan and Braves fan, I feel like I get kicked in the nuts every year by both teams. I quit Michigan yesterday, and I am quitting the Braves today.

  236. 236
    Clark Says:

If that’s not a change in momentum, I don’t know what is. Been a nice season….this would be an awful way to end it.

BEAT THE LUCKY ASTROS! COME ON!

  237. 237
    David Remy Says:

It cleared by three inches, JoeyT.

  238. 238
    Mike Says:

Im afraid to think who they would bring in next inning.

  239. 239
    ermoore Says:

I realize now that if we actually managed to pull this off, our bullpen is SO absolutely pathetic that there’s no chance we could win against St. Louis (or probably even San Diego).

When the teams leaves Houston and they need to leave the bullpen. Just don’t let them back in the clubhouse. They’ve cost us this series. They should be ashamed. They should return their salaries.

Is there a worse bullpen in the majors?

  240. 240
    David Remy Says:

    Thomson? It’s Reitsma.

  241. 241
    Mike Clay Says:

    Yea…take three…okay rick……..

  242. 242
    JoeyT Says:

Well, hey, at least I don’t have to worry about driving eight hours and paying $30 for parking on my day off tomorrow.

I can’t believe even the best reliever failed.

Langerhans on. Knock him home, Super Rookie.

  243. 243
    steel211 Says:

I saying this now…while Reitsma is warming up. If he comes in…season over. Mark my words.

  244. 244
    Kirk Says:

Bobby’s got R up. Can’t believe he wouldn’t try McBride first.

  245. 245
    gryn Says:

Why on earth didn’t Lidge pitch that inning? What the hell were they saving him for?

  246. 246
    jenny Says:

    Alex R, I’m very sorry.

And I think I’m going to be sick.

  247. 247
    David Remy Says:

Kirk, I think they’ve got a bunch of RH hitters coming up.

  248. 248
    Stu Says:

Well, steel211, the season ended before Reitsma came in. It sucks being a Braves fan in October.

  249. 249
    Aram Says:

Why not bat Betemit instead of Kelly Johnson?

  250. 250
    Mac Thomason Says:

What did we do? Honestly? Why are we being punished?

  251. 251
    Kirk Says:

Falcons are about to lose on a last second field goal. All around bad day.

  252. 252
    Brian Says:

Stop the insanity, Braves! Honestly, I have to laugh. Really laugh my ass off at this. Astros’ luck has nothing to do with it — we have all just witnessed the nadir of pitching incompetence. I mean, Farnsworth practically conceded the grand-slam to Berkman and now Ausmus? WTF? Can’t get the job done without the right tools.

    Brian

  253. 253
    Stu Says:

I think Betemit may have died before the playoffs started and no one has said anything yet. That’s the only possible explanation for his inexplicable absence from the last two games.

  254. 254
    mathew f. Says:

Farnsworth just became a lot cheaper this offseason. Not that I want him.

  255. 255
    David Remy Says:

I can’t believe Bobby’s sending Reitsma out there again. F**k redemption.

  256. 256
    fjensen Says:

No Betemit in game as pinch hitter and now Reitsma????

  257. 257
    David Remy Says:

Maybe the Braves aren’t tipping the clubhouse guys as well as they should?

    McBride warming up.

  258. 258
    Frank Says:

Now it’s our bullpen against their’s. Guess how that’s going to end…

  259. 259
    gryn Says:

    Oh my god.

  260. 260
    Mike Says:

My heart just skipped 6 beats there.

  261. 261
    putter Says:

What a cheap park. Opposite field, off the end of the bat. ridiculous

  262. 262
    David Remy Says:

Bring the paddles. My heart just stopped.

  263. 263
    Jay Says:

    this ballpark is a f**king joke…

  264. 264
    jenny Says:

    Charging to 360…CLEAR!

  265. 265
    Kirk Says:

That foul could not have been any closer to being a HR. Maybe R’s luck is changing? Doubtful.

  266. 266
    Mike Says:

That first pitch to Berkman has been a strike all day.

  267. 267
    David Remy Says:

    Thanks, jenny. I needed that.

  268. 268
    Jay Says:

great, and the falcons just lost. at least the dawgs cked the crap out of tennessee

  269. 269
    Kirk Says:

Ensberg up to win it. IBB?

  270. 270
    JoeyT Says:

    Berkman out!

If Burke doesn’t score here, that hit might have been a GOOD thing.

  271. 271
    atlinl.a. Says:

Time to bring in the priest for last rites.

  272. 272
    steel211 Says:

Mac…I dont know what we did to deserve this. This is terrible. Falcons loss doenst help any.

  273. 273
    jenny Says:

Well, folks, David has a sinus rhythm. At least temporarily.

I turned off the game…I don’t want to wind up with an ulcer at 18. So this site is all the updates I have.

  274. 274
    JoeyT Says:

Good move with the IBB. One run loses it. Ensberg on doesn’t matter, you get the force out, and Ensberg is just ridiculous.

  275. 275
    David Remy Says:

Chip’s making Bagwell out to be the next Kirk Gibson. Lord, I hope not.

  276. 276
    atlinl.a. Says:

No matter what happens here, I want to apologize for posting HoRam’s home pitching stats when we were up 6-1. My bad.

    Stu Says:

Anybody listening to this on the radio? You’d think Chip was an Astros homer based on his commentary. Building up Bagwell. I hate Chip. I wish Don would break his nose or something.

Dammit, how many times does Giles have to show he can’t bunt before Cox gets the message.

  292. 292
    gryn Says:

Why didn’t they just have Furcal steal in the first place?

  293. 293

    Cancel that.

I can’t believe that bunt call. I wish Alex was here to be all over that.

    Frank Says:

    No DP, Chipper, Pleeeeeeease!!!

  296. 296
    Jonathan Says:

THAT’S WHY I HATE THE BUNT!! Guys rave on about small ball, but you don’t execute sometimes & you’re just giving them outs.
And then Furcal steals anyway – why not just go with the straight steal instead of wasting outs on bunts!
And, no, I’m not one of these guys who says you should NEVER bunt. But it’s called for way too much…

  297. 297

    Alex R. Says:

    JoeyT

I am here I was just remaining silent. Giles cant bunt but at least he was HACKING like always.

thank god they walked Chipper…Andruw has been the far better hitter this series.

  302. 302

okay Andruw, if you’re the MVP, prove it right here.

  303. 303

  304. 304

Keep fighting, Braves. Just block out those asshole Astros fans, and these asshole announcers.

it feels like the weight of the world is against the Braves.

If there’s any justice in this world, we get a chance tomorrow night. Just one more chance.

  325. 325
    Alex R. Says:

We need to give positive reinforcement to Reitsma right now…c’mon Chris. C’mon…one more strike, baby!!!

  326. 326

I’m now very glad they pinch-ran for Berkman.

  327. 327

Great job, Chris….I am applauding his 2 inning effort. Great job.

  328. 328
    Mac Thomason Says:

Maybe Reitsma needed to be more tired?

  329. 329
    Kirk Says:

Escaped two R innings. We’re pushing the envelope here.

  330. 330
    David Remy Says:

Okay, Reitsma proved his mettle, now who pitches the 12th?

  331. 331
    Alex R. Says:

    Mac,

should we dare try Reitsma for 1 more inning? I mean, it will officially burn him for tomorrow but maybe we should russian roullette it again?

  332. 332
    Stu Says:

    How very un-clown-like, eh, steel?

Time for Smurph to step up, dang it. Or Langerhans, again. Or McCann, again. Someone, please. Please. Please?

  333. 333
    kc Says:

I can’t believe this, when I finally lose faith in Reitsma, he is on fire!!! I should just go ahead and say I have lost faith in the whole Braves team!!!

  334. 334
    steel211 Says:

I too will applaud the effort by Reitsma. I cant believe I just said that but he pitched great today.

  335. 335

    Brower in the 12th

  336. 336

Francouer is due, DUE for something magicla right here…c’mon Frenchy.

  337. 337
    JoeyT Says:

I never lost faith in Reitsma; however, he should not go out for a third inning.

  338. 338
    Alex R. Says:

Well, here comes McCann…can he save our asses one LAST TIME?

  339. 339
    Alex R. Says:

whoops…hometown boy Langerhans…a homer would be nice or get on for McCann!

  340. 340
    David Remy Says:

I’m with Mike. Let Brower pitch the 12th.

  341. 341
    steel211 Says:

Yes stu…very un-clown-like. He officially turned in his wig and red nose.

  342. 342
    Mike Clay Says:

As if the braves explosion isnt bad enough, it’s Dallas 17 Eagles 0 through one quarter >:O

  343. 343
    gryn Says:

Langerhans had a great at bat there.

  344. 344
    JoeyT Says:

McCann is about to hit a two-run HR. He’s so clutch. He’s the new Jeter, except that he actually IS clutch.

  345. 345
    Alex R. Says:

    Langerhans AGAIN.

Hes on for the 4th time.

If we win today, and Bobby starts Brian Jordan tomorrow, I am going to be unbelievably furious. Just screeching mad.

  346. 346
    David Remy Says:

Thomson warming up. Betemit on deck.

  347. 347
    Alex R. Says:

    Betemit on deck.

    Now, Bobby, THATS good managing.

    FINALLY.

  348. 348
    atlinl.a. Says:

    Thomson in the bullpen

  349. 349
    steel211 Says:

HE S ALIVE!!! Betemit on deck…

  350. 350
    gryn Says:

Hmmm, Thomson. This smacks of Charlie Liebrandt to me.

  351. 351
    JoeyT Says:

Wait, you mean Bobby is PLAYING the .300 hitter?

  352. 352
    Alex R. Says:

    Did anyone just hear Sutcliffe?

Why in hell would HoRam start over Thomson??

    why
    ???????????????????????

  353. 353
    Alex R. Says:

Can someone explain why HoRam would get the start over Thomson?

Smoltz with his arm in a sling would be more trustworthy.

  354. 354
    Mike Clay Says:

stop worrying about tomm. It jinxed us once already.

  355. 355
    JoeyT Says:

From the Braves official site, Alex:

If a decisive fifth game is necessary in this best-of-five series, the Braves will send southpaw Horacio Ramirez to the mound. They believe if his changeup is working, he can be effective against a Houston lineup that is loaded with right-handed hitters. At the same time, with him on the mound, they force Lance Berkman to hit from the right side.

With Ramirez scheduled for the fifth game, the Braves added much-needed depth to their bullpen by making John Thomson available for relief appearances in the final two games of the Series.

  356. 356
    Alex R. Says:

Heres the good news: if this game keeps going, they are running out of pitchers and Lidge is getting very very spent.

Even if Lidge pitched tomorrow (assuming there is a tomorrow), he wont be effective.

  357. 357
    David Remy Says:

The Astros have yet to see a Braves lefty start, plus Ramirez pitches well at Turner Field, especially at night. Thomson would be on call, of course, as would Smoltz, et al.

  358. 358
    gryn Says:

Seeing that even Langerhans can steal on Lidge, why oh why was Giles bunting?

  359. 359
    atlinl.a. Says:

Please oh please stop talking about this hypothetical Game 5…

  360. 360
    David Remy Says:

    P.S.

Bobby says that Ramirez is laying off his cutter, which is the pitch that’s gotten him into so much trouble, especially with the long ball.

  361. 361
    Alex R. Says:

    JoeyT,

I see your posting and I still think its a horrible horrible horrible horrible decision to start HoRam EVER in the post season.

Just be thankful that a Game 5 would be in Atlanta and at night….the one scenario I have seen Horam be at all successful. Can you IMAGINE if Horam had started a day game in Houston. It would have been a 15-0 game.

  362. 362
    Stu Says:

I will be shocked if we get another chance to bat this season.

  363. 363
    Mike Clay Says:

Didn’t we already agree that speculation about tomm. is a bad idea?

  364. 364
    JoeyT Says:

Alex R., I completely agree with you about HR. I was just posting to let you know that the HR game 5 thing is verified, and not just an ESPN guy extrapolating.

  365. 365
    Alex R. Says:

    JoeyT

I know you agree…no biggie. But still, I think Thomson is a better start tomorrow though turning Berkman around is effective.

I cant believe I am going to say this but the longer the game goes, the more it favors us…as bad as our pen has been, Houston is almost out of pitchers. I also don’t know how well rested Clemens is.

  366. 366
    steel211 Says:

    Thompson looks sharp so far…

  367. 367
    Alex R. Says:

so far, Thomson looks CRISP out there.

I think we should consider letting him bat and keeping him out there like a start.

  368. 368
    JoeyT Says:

I just hope that Thomson shuts down the Astros for however many innings it takes to eek out a run, and that Smoltz magically heals overnight.

    That’s all I want.

  369. 369
    David Remy Says:

Bobby’s counting on Thomson taking them the rest of the way.

  370. 370
    Alex R. Says:

Great inning John…njow it makes me wish more we had you starting tomorrow but we need to be as positive as possible now about HoRam if theres a Monday game.

Let’s pray for that problem and that we escape the bandbox from hell, ALIVE.

    F-ng Houston.

  371. 371
    JoeyT Says:

Alex, I think that’s absolutely what Bobby has in mind. You have to keep him out there in a game like this.

  372. 372
    Mac Thomason Says:

This is the second-most comments for a game thread ever. Record is 413, August 20, lost to the Padres in 13 on Devine’s first grand slam.

  373. 373
    Kirk Says:

Thomson looked really good. We actually may have an edge now. Houston’s bullpen is almost completely spent.

  374. 374
    kc Says:

Everytime Ensberg is at the plate, we should walk him. The remaining Astros lineup is a complete joke except Biggio.

Guys, there is no tomorrow until we take care of today….

  375. 375
    atlinl.a. Says:

Lidge has thrown 45 pitches…do they send him back out there?

  376. 376
    David Remy Says:

Who’s left on the bench? Orr, Jordan, who else?

  377. 377
    Alex R. Says:

    Kirk,

I fully agree…even if we dont score right now, if we can just keep holding them, I think we can pull this out late. There 8th and 9th inning momentum is a past memory now.

  378. 378
    atlinl.a. Says:

Question: Is Clemens available to pitch? Just wondering.

  379. 379
    JoeyT Says:

I don’t see Bobby using any more bench. I mean, he can’t even pinch-run for Franco with no backup first basemen.

  380. 380
    jenny Says:

On two days rest? I doubt it.

  381. 381
    Alex R. Says:

    David,

Estrada’s left, right? And don’t even utter Jordan’s name. He’s Voldemort to me now..the one who’s name shall not be uttered or something.

  382. 382
    JoeyT Says:

Clemens has moved to the bullpen, so one would assume he’s available to pitch.

  383. 383
    Matthew Says:

TERRY PENDLETON ON DECK!!! HE’S A LEGAL HITTER!!!! LETS DO THIS 92 STYLE!!!!

  384. 384
    David Remy Says:

Thanks, I’d forgotten about Estrada. Just trying to get a head count.

  385. 385
    Piers Says:

Orr, Estrada and Jordan are our bench players.

  386. 386
    Alex R. Says:

Even if Clemens does come out, he’s already hurting and on 2 days rest. I like our chances.

  387. 387
    Matthew Says:

I just purchased a blank white jersey off of ebay! I will write the winner of every game on it so I can no longer be a loser!!!!!

  388. 388
    Alex R. Says:

Orr, Estrada and the ONE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED, OK PEOPLE?

  389. 389
    David Remy Says:

The Astros have emptied their bench. Only a pitcher can PH.

  390. 390
    Piers Says:

Ok Chipper, get something started here. As in a home run.

  391. 391
    atlinl.a. Says:

Chip just mentioned the unmentionable one. Sorry.

  392. 392
    Alex R. Says:

By the way, let me step aside and applaud the Falcson for their efforts today. No Vick, and Schaub looked great…the Falcons may have the best back up QB in the NFL and a great effort without Vick. It’s not a bad loss and this team still looks on course to replay Philly in the NFC title game.

  393. 393
    Kirk Says:

Houston has no one on the bench and no bullpen left. Clemens is the only other pitcher who could possibly appear. Ausmus is now out in the field. If we can’t score before Houston now, we deserve to lose.

  394. 394
    Alex R. Says:

Ok, we did nothing against Wheeler but if Thomson can hold them again, eventually, a tired, and hurting Rocket comes out…he will not look as crisp as guys like Wheeler, Qualls and Lidge.

  395. 395
    Mike Clay Says:

Philly isn’t making it this year. We are terrible out of the gates in games. I just can’t see it this year.

  396. 396
    Stu Says:

I’d say, regardless of what happens next, we don’t deserve to win this game.

  397. 397
    Alex R. Says:

I almost think Houston knows now its tough to win this game with no people left and at the very least, they are trying to get us to burn everything before tomorrow night. They can lose asnd still live to play again and they know this.

  398. 398
    steel211 Says:

The Falcons offense played great as did Matt Schaub. The defense did not play well however. The Vinateri field goals at the end of all their games is getting old.

  399. 399
    atlinl.a. Says:

This is one of those games where I desperately wish that I didn’t so desperately care…know what I’m saying?

  400. 400
    kc Says:

I say the Astros don’t deserve to win this game more than the Braves.

  401. 401
    Alex R. Says:

    Mike Clay,

How did you come to be a Braves and Eagles fan? Thats highly unusual!

  402. 402
    Alex R. Says:

    kc,

The Houston asshole NEVER EVER deserve to win more then the Braves. Thats a given.

  403. 403
    David Remy Says:

I want the Braves to win this game so Mac can keep working on that Wandy tune.

  404. 404
    Alex R. Says:

wow….scary scary out. but hes out. thank god.

  405. 405
    jenny Says:

I’m a Braves and a Patriots fan, Alex. Do I get to join the Incongruous Fandom Club?

  406. 406
    Mike Clay Says:

I’m not sure really. I live in PA, so that explains the Eagles. As fo the braves, i just fell in love with them at a young age and have been following them ever since. But yes, it is very unusual.

  407. 407
    jenny Says:

And, oops, I shouldn’t have said that.

  408. 408
    kc Says:

Can we just walk Ensberg for %$#”!’ sake?!

  409. 409
    Mike Clay Says:

    Dallas 24 Philly 3

  410. 410
    Alex R. Says:

    Jenny,

There’s not a dislike between Boston & Atlanta the way there is between Philly & Atlanta…I am much less surprised.

And by the way, I generally like the Patriots also (though not like the Falcons). I think Brady is a good guy and I like Bob Kraft, the owner.

  411. 411
    Alex R. Says:

I am not worried about this walk. Thomson still looks very comfortable and very confident out there.

  412. 412
    Brian Says:

OK, it is officially time for theme music. I’m throwing on some Widespread Panic. Rally Braves!!

    Brian

  413. 413
    atlinl.a. Says:

oh man, Alex, I wish you hadn’t said that, even if it’s true.

  414. 414
    JoeyT Says:

Alex R., I’m kind of the opposite of Mike Clay, but also a Braves and Eagles fan. I grew up in the southeast and lived in Philly for a few years (college and some after).

Growing up, everyone around here was a Braves fan, and I was no different, but NFL wise, it was about half Saints/half Falcons. I didn’t really have a team until I moved up north for a while. It’s really hard to not get caught up in the Eagles if you live in the Philadelphia area for any length of time.

  415. 415
    David Remy Says:

Thomson’s going right after them. I admire that.

  416. 416
    Mac Thomason Says:

Let the record show that the lineup the Astros have out now is really sorry.

  417. 417
    Alex R. Says:

    atlinl.a.

    see…not to worry.

It’s about body language. Thomson looks very confident out there…I am feeling good for him and now really wish he was going tomorrow, if theres a tomorrow.

  418. 418
    ermoore Says:

How many of our players that didn’t make the post-season roster got to travel with the team and sit in the dugout? I’ve seen Perez, Hampton, and Boyer that I can remember, but is it just the injured players? I can’t imagine Kolb wanting to remain with the team (though his spirit is definitely still with bullpen), but what about Davies, Hollandsworthless, etc.?

  419. 419
    Mac Thomason Says:

Also let the record show a new comments record of 418.

  420. 420
    Mike Clay Says:

You are right Joey. No one cares about the Phillies, 76ers, Flyers really. But, if you don’t like the Eagles, you take a lot of shit. Its great. Best fans\environment in sports.

  421. 421
    Aram Says:

I am a Braves, Vikings, and Spurs guy. No one is more all over the place than me.

Our big guns need to quit matching groundouts with the Luke Scotts and Adam Everetts of the world. Someone needs to step the F up.

  422. 422
    Stu Says:

    Andruw’s going deep.

  423. 423
    atlinl.a. Says:

I am a Braves and Portland Trail Blazers guy. That’s a coast-to-coast thing.

  424. 424
    Alex R. Says:

    Aram-

I am A SPOURS FAN ALSO—REALLY? ANOTHER SPURS FAN!!!! :-)

I hate the Rockets and obviously, hate all Houston teams.

  425. 425
    Mike Clay Says:

    Andruw’s walking

  426. 426
    Alex R. Says:

Braves, Spurs Georgia & Alabama for me…I like the Falcons but not as passionate abnout the NFL. I more care what the Georgia Bulldogs IN the NFL do like Champ Bailey, Richard Seymour et all.

  427. 427
    atlinl.a. Says:

I will cautiously allow that from a strategic standpoint we are in a much better position at this point…we’ve got a rested starter in there and most of our best hitters are still in the lineup. They’ve got a tired and hurt Clemens left to pitch, and guys I’ve never heard of in the lineup.

    This is a cautious, fingers-crossed assessment, I stress…

    Good eye Andruw.

  428. 428
    jenny Says:

Great fan environment? Didn’t Philly fans boo Santa Claus? What’s up with that?

    JoeyT Says:

Mike Clay, I remember going to Phillies games (when I was there, they still played at the Vet), and the stands being completely empty. When the Braves were around, the crowds were fine, but it was kind of creepy to see, say, a Phillies/Expos game and just have entire sections with only two people sitting.

    Fair ball! Nice kick, Wheeler!

  430. 430
    Aram Says:

Yes, I also hate everything Houston. The Astros, Yao Ming, Jeff Van Gundy, Dom Capers. It’s all terrible.

    Fair Ball!

  431. 431
    Alex R. Says:

wow, what an idiot move by Wheeler.

It takes a dumbass move like that to get the ball rolling…GO BRAVES GO.

  432. 432
    atlinl.a. Says:

    WE GET A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  433. 433
    Mac Thomason Says:

This would be another bunt situation, but last year Francouer bunted a ball into his face and broke his eye socket, so I don’t know about bunting here.

  434. 434
    Kirk Says:

Bad play by Wheeler, we have got to take advantage right here, right now.

  435. 435
    Alex R. Says:

    GREAT JOB FRENCHY!!!!

    JUST A FLYBALL, BOYS…A FLYBALL.

  436. 436
    JoeyT Says:

I actually LIKE a bunt there.

  437. 437
    Mike Clay Says:

Yea well the passion is for the Eagles.

…and yes they booed Santa Claus. It was funny. Nothing wrong with a sense of humor in a crowd :)

  438. 438
    Jonathan Says:

    GS for Mccann?

  439. 439
    atlinl.a. Says:

    C’mon McCann!!!!

  440. 440
    Alex R. Says:

By the way Arm, I actually have a ton of friends and family who live in Houston and have already been there 3 times this year but despite all that, I HATE THEIR SPORTS TEAMS…HATE THEM.

  441. 441
    jenny Says:

Great fan environment? Didn’t Philly fans boo Santa Claus? What’s up with that?

  442. 442
    jenny Says:

Why did that just post twice when I refreshed…I hate Macs.

  443. 443
    JoeyT Says:

A grand slam would be nice, but so would a sac fly.

  444. 444
    Jonathan Says:

I went to a Braves game in Philly in September – was the series the Braves dropped 3 of 4. I was at the 1 game Braves won. Pretty fun walking through everybody afterwards with my Braves shirt on – gotta say I was a little nervous (having heard about Philly fans)…

  445. 445
    David Remy Says:

This is it, folks. Pete Orr on deck. Brower in the bullpen.

  446. 446
    atlinl.a. Says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! They’re saying Orr’s going to hit for Thomson and Brower’s coming in!

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooo

  447. 447
    Alex R. Says:

    Mac hates you too? :-)

Ok…I have made that joke before..sorry I couldnt resist.

  448. 448
    kc Says:

Should we let Thomson bat regardless of how will happen? I think we should.

  449. 449
    atlinl.a. Says:

If McCann hits a GS maybe they’ll leave Thomson in…

  450. 450
    Alex R. Says:

why, why why why would Bobby take Thomson out?

    WHY?

its not like hes pitching tomorrow so just keep thomson out there…he looks sharp!!!!

  451. 451
    Jonathan Says:

If Mccann reaches & there’s a runner on 3rd for Thomson, look for a squeeze

  452. 452
    David Remy Says:

Plating a couple of runs guarantees that Thomson stays out there. Just need a single here.

  453. 453
    ermoore Says:

Brower frightens me, but also, who do we have left after him? McBride? Anyone else?

  454. 454
    Alex R. Says:

Wow…McCann got away with one today.

  455. 455
    Mike Clay Says:

Well, I wear my braves hat everywhere so I get glares from time to time. I wear it proudly at the Phils games too. It is acceptable for a Braves hat, it is not for Falcons\other attire. You will get booed until you cry. Its amazing.

  456. 456
    atlinl.a. Says:

    I just realized I’m rockin’ like Leo…ha!!!

  457. 457
    David Remy Says:

    Devine.

  458. 458
    Alex R. Says:

    dammit.

And now if Orr fucks up, we have no Thomson and Brower in a 6-6 tie.

this is potentially a devastating move. Leave thomson in and live to fight another day, cox.

  459. 459
    ermoore Says:

So, basically our season comes down to Pete Orr. Shit.

  460. 460
    Mac Thomason Says:

And now Brower has to pitch.

  461. 461
    Jonathan Says:

Memo to Braves hitters – swing at strikes, not balls!

  462. 462
    atlinl.a. Says:

OK, if Orr doesn’t get a hit the season’s over.

Hell, even if he does, the season STILL might be over.

  463. 463
    David Remy Says:

As much as I like Thomson, this is the right move.

  464. 464
    Alex R. Says:

now…we are fucked. I woiuld rather not score and have thomson out then risk it with orr and 2 outs and brower in a tie game….this could really finish us.

  465. 465
    JoeyT Says:

Now one of the crappy bullpen people come out to lose it.

    Nice, Bobby. Nice.

  466. 466
    Kirk Says:

S**t!!!! That was our chance and we kicked it away. S**t!!

  467. 467
    David Remy Says:

    All the Braves needed was a sac fly . . . .

  468. 468
    Alex R. Says:

Thomson could have gone Nanother 5 innings. Because even IF Brower is effective, eventually he has to come out for Joey Devine…we have mcbride left but thats it.

  469. 469
    steel211 Says:

Bases loaded and one out and the Braves cant do anything…pathetic. How many chances do they think their gonna get. Their lucky the game isnt over by now.

  470. 470
    ermoore Says:

Great. We just gave up our biggest advantage, a rested and ready-to-go Thomson. Now it’s Brower and Devine vs. Wheeler and Clemens.

    I am not happy.

  471. 471
    kc Says:

This is completely stupid, does Bobby realize what is our advantage is at the moment?

  472. 472
    Stu Says:

If I’d have pinch-hit anyone there, it would have been Estrada, then double-switched or something. As it is, season’s over.

  473. 473
    JoeyT Says:

I’d rather have McBride out there against a switch hitter and two righties than Brower. No question.

  474. 474
    putter Says:

Such a poor fundamental team at times. They have had trouble all year at moving runners up, bunting and scoring runners from third base with less than 2 outs. I hope that wasn’t their last chance…..

  475. 475
    atlinl.a. Says:

“It’s our lot in life. We were made to suffer.” — C3PO in Star Wars

I think it could be accurately applied to Braves fans in October.

  476. 476
    Kirk Says:

You guys can’t be seriously critcizing Cox for the PH for Thomson, can you? Come on, you have to put a real hitter up to try to get in front.

  477. 477
    ermoore Says:

But I did forget about McBride . . . but then it seems like Bobby has too.

  478. 478
    Alex R. Says:

yes…why didnt bobby double switch? It would have garnered thomson another 2-e3 innings, MINIMUM.

  479. 479
    JoeyT Says:

    One positive note:

Even Brower might be able to get out the bottom of the Astros AAA lineup.

  480. 480
    Kyle S Says:

I just got back from being gone all day. Hell of a game. I strongly disagree with bunting Francoeur, especially since it meant having to rely on McCann and Orr instead of Francoeur, Langerhans, or McCann.

Andruw should have caught the “home run,” it looks like. What a depressing game, even if somehow we come win.

  481. 481
    David Remy Says:

Bobby had to PH for Thomson. Have you guys forgotten the time he left Hudson in vs. Philadelphia?

  482. 482
    Alex R. Says:

    Kirk,

Logic in this situation dictated that either Cox double switch or take the goose egg. we needed to have Thomson out there, who was looking sharp and settled in.

  483. 483
    Brian Says:

I suppose Andruw was running on contact but is it possible that McCann missed a bunt sign? I know the bases are loaded but with one out and the pitcher’s spot coming up it would be an interesting, albeit gutsy, call and certainly better than pinch-hitting for Thompson.

    Brian

  484. 484
    Alex R. Says:

well…good inning for Brower…could we try & win this goddamn game now…PLEASE?

  485. 485
    Dix Says:

IT’S TIME TO SCORE A RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LET’S GO BRAVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  486. 486
    David Remy Says:

Six pitches for Brower that inning.

  487. 487
    JoeyT Says:

Hudson was at 100 pitches. Thomson had pitched two innings. Nobody ever says Bobby should take out Hudson in the third.

  488. 488
    Mac Thomason Says:

“Double switch”? Alex, that makes no sense. Thomson was already in the game. He came in in the ninth spot after Betemit made the last out pinch-hitting there. Bobby didn’t screw up. You have to take the shot to score.

  489. 489
    Mike Clay Says:

    Halftime: Eagles 3 Cowboys 27 :(

    Good work Brower.

  490. 490
    kc Says:

David, Thomson was not tired. This is a completely different situation.

  491. 491
    Mike Clay Says:

    Clemens is warming up.

  492. 492
    David Remy Says:

I agree that Thomson probably had plenty left in the tank, but you have to put someone who can hit up there. You have to take a chance on scoring enough insurance. Orr made contact; he didn’t whiff.

  493. 493
    Alex R. Says:

    Mac,

I disagree…Thomson looked great and you leave him out there…if we hit 20 innings we will be forced now to trust Devine. Not good. thats why you leave thomson out and live to fight another inning. I feel strongly about this.

  494. 494
    Alex R. Says:

Sutcliffe, sadly, is right that Furcal is hitting like Willie Mays Hays. Thats a true statement, sadly.

  495. 495
    Alex R. Says:

If this asshole wheeler would ever come out, I think we can take a hurting and exhausted Clemens.

    fucking dan wheeler.

  496. 496
    Mac Thomason Says:

I expect McBride will be the next man out. Twenty innings? Come on. I don’t think you can worry about what’s going to happen five innings from now.

  497. 497
    Rufino Linares Says:

If it comes to it, I think I would almost rather see Furcal come in to pitch and Devine go to short.

  498. 498
    ermoore Says:

Ok, we’ve got McBride and Devine left. They’ve got a not-100% Rocket. What happens if it goes six or seven more innings or just four or five for Houston? Will we see Sosa? HoRam? Smoltz? That guy who’s name we can’t say?

  499. 499
    Kirk Says:

I don’t get what you guys are saying. What double switch would have helped? When Thomson came in, Betemit had just made the last out PH for R. He could not have waited longer to come up to bat. You have an opportunity to take the lead, you have to go for it. Anything else is nuts.

  500. 500
    steel211 Says:

    Feel free to swing Chipper.

  501. 501
    Alex R. Says:

I would rather Chipper take pitches then pull a Giles.

  502. 502
    ermoore Says:

Oh, I’m not saying that 20 innings is something we should worry about, I’m just thinkin’ of some crazy what-ifs. Like if we won it right here.

  503. 503
    JoeyT Says:

    Andruw, B my MVP?

  504. 504
    Alex R. Says:

fucking dan wheeler you rotten bastard. Someone just kill this guy.

I hope Giles doesnt run or they will WALK Andruw.

    stay at first, ADHD boy.

  505. 505
    Jonathan Says:

Can’t believe how sharp Wheeler still looks having thrown 50 pitches

  506. 506
    JoeyT Says:

Andruw WAS hit by a pitch.

That means home run RIGHT NOW.

  507. 507
    kc Says:

    Chipper looked completely clueless…

  508. 508
    Mike Clay Says:

LaRoche is a pitcher, but we already wasted him.

  509. 509
    Alex R. Says:

Chipper pulled gthe same disappearing act in LAST YEARS first round? what the fuck already?

  510. 510
    JoeyT Says:

Wow. I’m shocked Andruw didn’t chase that.

  511. 511
    Rufino Linares Says:

Games like this certainly seem like a strong argument for letting good bullpen guys pitch > 1 inning stints- Wheeler has been ridiculous.

  512. 512
    Alex R. Says:

    Rufino,

I agree…its why we shouldnt have wasted Thomson.

  513. 513
    Alex R. Says:

    c’mon Brower…c’mon.

  514. 514
    Stu Says:

Biggio is 0-6, and that’s incredibly scary. There’s NO WAY we’re getting out of this inning alive. (You like the use of all caps, Alex?)

  515. 515
    Mac Thomason Says:

There’s an excellent chance that Oswalt is going to hit here and then Clemens come in to pitch, meaning that the Astros would have used 24 men on a 25 man roster. Has that ever happened?

Of course, have to get Biggio first.

  516. 516
    Dix Says:

    i tried guys….pray for outs

  517. 517
    kc Says:

This game is so depressing you know? Both teams are doing everything to lose it, but neither one seems to want to win the damn ball game…

  518. 518
    urlhix Says:

The first four hitters for us have hit 3 for 21 so far.

  519. 519
    Stu Says:

This game would have ended a couple hours ago if Garner hadn’t pinch run Burke for Berkman.

  520. 520
    Rufino Linares Says:

I could easily win the World’s Weakest Man contest right now. This is one of the more enervating games I have ever watched- my poor kid probably thinks he’s going to be an orphan before this god damned game ends.

  521. 521
    David Remy Says:

The Braves have left 16 men on base.

  522. 522
    Alex R. Says:

The commentators seem VERY pro Astro…It is really grossing me out.

    Stu,

love all caps when its the right time…you used it well, obi-wan.

  523. 523
    Rufino Linares Says:

Guess they will let Clemens hit. Please pop up the frigging bunt, you old fart.

  524. 524
    Kirk Says:

That walk to Biggio was exactly NOT what was needed. S**t.

  525. 525
    delg Says:

Ok… we were winning 5-1 when I left the house earlier, and it was like the bottom of the seventh. What have you people been doing since then?!

Anyway, I’m home now. We can go ahead and win now.

  526. 526
    Alex R. Says:

    Rufino,

By the way, you officially win the award for the coolest name on here BravesJournal. Alex.

c’mon Brower, block out Sutcliffe…er, the asshole fans.

  527. 527
    Rufino Linares Says:

Why, WHY would you throw a low pitch right there when he abso-fucking-lutely has to get a bunt down? That is stupid, stupid.

  528. 528
    JoeyT Says:

Yeah, Alex. I hate how they say pro-Astro things, then catch themselves, and try to force it balanced. Like, “These fans have been on a roller coaster tonight, and it sure would be great for them to go home happy. … … … (of course, it sure would be great for Braves fans for their team to win, too)”

  529. 529
    Alex R. Says:

    Joey

couldnt agree with you more…I hate Sutcliffe and hate Lyons over on FOX.

  530. 530
    Alex R. Says:

    THROW STRIKES.

  531. 531
    gryn Says:

Great idea – walk him to get to Ensberg. Unreal.

  532. 532
    Mac Thomason Says:

There’s no way Ensberg doesn’t get a hit here.

    It’s been great, guys.

  533. 533
    Alex R. Says:

oh god…2 basrunners, 1 pout and now ensberg.

Its been nice chatting with everyone. see you all in april.

    listen to the commentators. dispicable.

  534. 534
    Kirk Says:

Brower is toast, but he won’t be pulled for McBride. This sucks.

  535. 535
    Rufino Linares Says:

By the way, Chris Burke looks like that Luke-whatever guy looks like Brandon Backe looks like everybody else on that team- it’s like they just take one guy then he switches jerseys a lot. Except Everett and Berkman- those guys are too ugly to resemble anyone else.

  536. 536
    JoeyT Says:

Mac, Ensberg won’t get a hit here if Brower WALKS HIM

  537. 537
    gryn Says:

Why is Devine up? Is Bobby going to bring him in with the bases loaded? They’re going to destroy this kid’s career.

  538. 538
    atlinl.a. Says:

My guess is that they’re rooting for the Astros because they’re lazy and want to go cool their heels in St. Louis or with their families for a day, rather than go to Atlanta for Game 5.

  539. 539
    Rufino Linares Says:

I meant Ensberg was ugly- my apologies to Berkman, for what it’s worth.

  540. 540
    Alex R. Says:

great, to add insult to injury, ensberg is a fucking USC Torjan. I want barf…wheres the Matt Leinhart lovefest…fucking sutcliffe.

  541. 541
    Mike Clay Says:

  542. 542
    gryn Says:

    YES! JULIO!

  543. 543

I cannot believe Brower got out of that.

  544. 544

    YEEEAAAAHH! Nice dig Julio!

  545. 545
    Kyle S Says:

    Big dp. wow.

  546. 546
    Mac Thomason Says:

    Wow.

Ensberg is apparently a graduate of the Biggio School of Bad Baserunning.

  547. 547
    Alex R. Says:

good good…we live to fight another inning…this HAS to finally pump the Braves up. cmon boys…lets hand the rocket loss #2.

  548. 548
    Dix Says:

    COME ON BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  549. 549
    Kirk Says:

  550. 550

This game has got to end soon. I think one of my dogs just pissed on the rug and my kid smells like a fishery just exploded in his Huggies. If it isn’t over soon, at this rate my house is going to collapse around me and I’ll still be staring fixatedly at the frigging TV.

  557. 557
    urlhix Says:

C’mon Julio, become the oldest player to homer in the postseason.

  558. 558
    Brian Says:

Not that I’m complaining about the outcome but why do these guys insist on sliding head-first into first base? What you make up for in distance you lose in momentum. Usually, the trade-off isn’t worth it. Personally, I think umpires hate to see that shite!

    Brian

  559. 559
    Rufino Linares Says:

    Oldest ever pitcher v. batter?

  560. 560
    Alex R. Says:

    chill,

yup…I have a feeling Mac will be a disgruntled Bama fan or myself a disgruntled Georgia fan if Texas gets a FREE PASS PLAYING A JOKE BIG 12 SCHEDULE to play USC.

I am rooting hard for Notre Dame next weekend…I hope the asshole arrognat Trojans go down.

and yeah, auburn got screwed…you beat my Dawgs twice and absolutely deserved a shot at the title…you go unbeaten in the SEC you shouild play for a nat’l title. a joke.

    Rufino Linares Says:

I always thought the only reason to slide into first was if you had some reason to believe it would be an errant throw and there would need to be a tag applied. Otherwise, bad idea.

  566. 566
    JoeyT Says:

Pat Gonzalez: “Julio, do NOT get thrown out. Do NOT get thrown OUT!”

  567. 567
    Alex R. Says:

Good for you Franco, but dont get thrown out….LaRoche has already been used.

    thanks Freddie.

and that was a fucking homer call.

    BULLSHIT. BULLSHIT.

  568. 568

Rufino, that was the funniest post here ever. Good one.

The bad news…the good hard throwing roger clemens.

Can the Braves possibly have a bigger mountain to climg right now??

  578. 578
    bledsoe Says:

I hate to be the Pollyana here, but as time marches on, the Braves’ chances are improving. Astros have burned eight pitchers to our five and all their bench players. We have one left, two if you count Brian Jordan.

  579. 579
    Alex R. Says:

    throw strikes, jerk.

  580. 580
    ermoore Says:

Bledsoe, I’m sorry, have you seen our pitchers? We could have four fresh, rested Browers and I would still take Clemens.

  581. 581
    Alex R. Says:

    AHHHHHHH

DONT SAY THE ONE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED, NAME. DONT EVER SAY HIS NAME. DONT.

  582. 582
    Kirk Says:

I can’t believe Brower is out to pitch another inning. He is out of gas. It will be a miracle if we live to see the 17th.

  583. 583
    delg Says:

Let’s just get this over with, said Mac. Why string it out??

    IRONY!!

  584. 584
    JoeyT Says:

bledsoe, you like the matchup of Clemens vs. Brower/McBride/Devine?

    I don’t.

  585. 585
    Rufino Linares Says:

That chick with the baby was hot.

  586. 586
    Alex R. Says:

Borwer, do not walk raul chavez. do not walk raul chavez.

  587. 587
    Mike Clay Says:

Anyone know whos winning the World’s Weakest Man Competition? I saw some of the stapler round….like 700 times.

  588. 588
    JoeyT Says:

If this was a Fox game, it would be the longest postseason game in MLB history.

  589. 589
    Rufino Linares Says:

Steve Trachsel must have started that 2000 Mets-Giants game.

  590. 590
    Alex R. Says:

    Mike Clay,

I like the 6-2 120 lb. guy myself.

  591. 591
    David Remy Says:

Chip and Don took over after the fifth and have been yakking ever since. This is grueling, too grueling for words.

  592. 592
    Alex R. Says:

Rufino….you are hysterical. Thats probably true. a Nine inning Traschel game has to be longer then this!!!

  593. 593
    Rufino Linares Says:

Do we really need examples of starters relieving in the playoffs to prove it has happened before? Anyone still watching this train wreck obviously knows that, Sutcliffe. Shut up and go trim your faggy beard.

  594. 594
    Alex R. Says:

    Great inning, Jim-bo.

I officially HATE Rick Sutcliffe and his pro astros commentary…he is beyond being beaten savagely…he needs to be sent straight to hell.

  595. 595
    bledsoe Says:

Sorry to bring a ray of sunshine to this funeral.

Uh, yes. I like the fact that we have 2 PH to their none. I like the fact that we have at least three fresh arm in the bullpen, and we are facing a 42 year old who threw 100 pitches 3 days ago.

Every inning we survive, our chances of winning go up.

But if it’ll make you feel better:

    WE”RE DOOOMED!!!

  596. 596
    Mike Clay Says:

I don’t know Alex. I think he screwed himself by coming through with the stapler so quickly. We will see if he can come back in the “Bench Press Julio Franco’s bat” Event.

  597. 597
    Kirk Says:

Wonders never cease. 3 shutout innings from Brower. Remember he pitched 2 yesterday. Devine or McBride in the 17th?

  598. 598
    Alex R. Says:

He is starting to make me miss the good old days of Steve Lyons. Those were the days….balk, balk, balk…..

  599. 599
    David Remy Says:

Chip keeps referring to this game as an “extravaganza.” I sincerely hope the circus nabs him when it comes to town.

  600. 600
    kc Says:

Can everyone believe what we are seeing from Reitsma and Brower today?

  601. 601
    JoeyT Says:

I know they didn’t used to have LCS, and they didn’t have the current first round until ten years ago, but it’s still pretty freaking phenominal that this is the longest playoff game in the history of baseball.

  602. 602
    Brian Says:

I don’t get Braves radio in Tampa. Has Don Sutton mentioned that we’re getting ‘free baseball’ yet?

    Brian

  603. 603
    Alex R. Says:

That stapler thing was impressive, Mike. I grant you that.

  604. 604
    Stu Says:

Does anybody remember when Hudson was on the mound earlier today? It’s a little foggy.

  605. 605
    Alex R. Says:

way to take a pitch, MCCANN. Were you taking hitting tips from Giles and Fuckal?

  606. 606
    gryn Says:

Seven shutout innings from Reitsma, Thomson, and Brower. I can’t believe we’re not winning.

  607. 607
    Mike Clay Says:

    Thank You master.

  608. 608
    Rob Cope Says:

Just think of the money Fox is losing by not showing their regularly scheduled programs… darn…

  609. 609
    David Remy Says:

That was a long time ago, Brian. Now he’s counting broadcaster bathroom breaks. “A new record.”

  610. 610
    Alex R. Says:

Great, the one wwho shall not be named is hitting. Dammit.

  611. 611
    Alex R. Says:

    Just take a walk, nameless…c’mon.

  612. 612
    ermoore Says:

    Did that just happen?

  613. 613
    Jonathan Says:

    Jordan!!!

  614. 614
    Alex R. Says:

Voldemort with a double…we can say his name now…yeah JORDAN…YEAH

  615. 615
    Mike Clay Says:

I’ll give Alex the credit for that double.

  616. 616
    Rob Cope Says:

    Whoa, didn’t say THAT coming…

  617. 617
    Kirk Says:

Jordan doubles off a right handed power pitcher. If we don’t score here, we never will.

  618. 618
    ermoore Says:

Wow. Who saw that one coming?

  619. 619
    Alex R. Says:

Oh God, though…if we win now it means Cox will definitely start him. Oh god.

  620. 620
    JoeyT Says:

If Jordan scores here, with Brower getting the win, this game has officially gone on so long it’s entered the Twilight Zone.

  621. 621
    kc Says:

    Can you believe this?!

  622. 622
    basil Says:

Jordan got that hit because of his tremendous heart.

  623. 623
    Jonathan Says:

Man, there are a lot of UGLY batting lines today

  624. 624
    Rufino Linares Says:

If Bobby really knew Jordan would double, and he was just waiting for the right time to use him, wouldn’t he have picked, oh I don’t know, a time with SOMEBODY ON BASE? Why do announcers feel compelled to say such idiotic shit?

  625. 625
    Mark Says:

Remember Jordan won Game 3 in the NLDS in Houston back in ’99 in extras…

  626. 626
    JoeyT Says:

In 1999, Jordan was a good hitter.

  627. 627
    Alex R. Says:

God Dammit fuckal…another wasted inning. You knjow Giles will fucking swing at the first pitch.

We have just wasted 7 great relief innings and Jordan double. once in a lifetime opportunities folks.

  628. 628
    Mac Thomason Says:

This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen.

  629. 629
    David Remy Says:

Did Jordan advance? I’m on a delay.

  630. 630
    Jonathan Says:

LOL @ Basil – Rufino just said (wrote) what I thought after I heard that comment…

  631. 631
    JoeyT Says:

    Yeah, he moved up.

  632. 632
    Alex R. Says:

Rick Sutcliffe is one of the strangest things I have HEARD. Gee, ESPN, was John Tudor not avaailable?

    fucking GILES.

WE just wasted jordan’s only hit for the next 3 years.

  633. 633
    putter Says:

Does Giles have a hit yet in the playoffs?

  634. 634
    Kirk Says:

Pathetic excuse for a swing there Marcus. S**t!!

  635. 635
    kc Says:

    Marcus sucks big time…

  636. 636
    Mike Clay Says:

Eagles Sheldon Brown just picked off a pass and returned it for a TD (see Last weeks game vs KC)

…only we are down 30-10 this week :(

  637. 637
    Steffen Says:

Giles = big talk, nothing else.

  638. 638
    Rob Cope Says:

To be honest, I think that was Jordan’s last hit EVER. Honestly, is he actually going to get anymore atbats throughout the playoffs to get a hit?

  639. 639
    Rufino Linares Says:

It’s nice to know that Babe Ruth was apparently mildly retarded. Thanks, Anheuser-Busch, for bringing that to light.

  640. 640
    Stu Says:

The whole top of our order sucks big time. The only guy I even trust at the plate at this point is Ryan freaking Langerhans. How sad is that?

  641. 641
    Mark Says:

Hey Mike, where are you from? I’m switchin between both games right now too. Less and less of the Eagles though…

  642. 642
    Rufino Linares Says:

It sounds like Andruw and Chipper are trying to double-team Erin Andrews. Good luck, guys!

  643. 643
    Mac Thomason Says:

    I’ve missed Erin.

The Braves have left 17 men on base.

  644. 644
    Mike Clay Says:

    LMAO. Hilarious Rufino.

  645. 645
    mathew f. Says:

Safe to say, if we win, Estrada will be catching tomorrow.

  646. 646
    ermoore Says:

Thanks lady, it’s good to know that Chipper is still the same old Chipper. Let him take you out after the game.

  647. 647
    Rufino Linares Says:

Trying to be serious for once, I think if Devine gets this loss we should probably trade him. I don’t know if he will be able to mentally bounce back from all the crap he’s been through this year…

  648. 648
    Alex R. Says:

    I got a call..

I missed Chipper and Andruw going ‘Gold Club/Hooters’ on hottie Erin Andrews?

  649. 649
    mathew f. Says:

Rocket looks tired, i hope they make Biggio pitch.

  650. 650
    JoeyT Says:

    Devine is kicking ass.

  651. 651
    Anonymous Says:

Who has slept with Erin Andrews?

    A. Andruw Jones
    B. Chipper Jones
    C. Terry Pendleton
    D. Both A and B
    E. A, B, and C

  652. 652
    Alex R. Says:

    Wow…Devine is looking Devine.

can we PLEASE get to the rocket already next inning?

oh my god….sutcliffe is COMPLIMENTING DEVINE. I just fainted from shock.

  653. 653
    Rufino Linares Says:

I rescind my thoughts about Devine not bouncing back mentally. Apparently that was a self-reflection.

  654. 654
    Alex R. Says:

really, anonymous? making this up or is this really something you know?

    is that YOU Derek Lowe?

  655. 655
    Mike Clay Says:

    F: Francoeur, Jeff

  656. 656
    Rufino Linares Says:

    G: Not me. Sadly.

  657. 657
    Alex R. Says:

If she sleeps with McCann, she should go to jail for statuatory rape.

  658. 658
    Alex R. Says:

    Mike Clay-

    look…weakest man competition!~~~go stapler guy!!!!

  659. 659
    Clark Says:

Wonder if Smoltz is available to close the game if we get a lead in one of these innings? I like what Devine did last inning…but if Clemens can do it, I’d like to think Smoltz might be able to (since he’s not starting tomorrow).

  660. 660
    Mac Thomason Says:

Why did Erin leave Turner Sports?

  661. 661
    Mike Clay Says:

If this game outlasts the Eagles game, I will not drink tonight…

    hmm…on second thought…

i will say “Damn, that was one long baseball game,” and then drink.

  662. 662
    Alex R. Says:

Think Chipper and Andruw are exchanging notes on their crazy night with Erin? if it involved midgets, then its SOOOOO Zoolander of them.

  663. 663
    David Remy Says:

I think she got some hockey gig. You know, her hair was always this yellowish green color I associate with kids who spend too much time at the pool. And those teeth! Way too bright.

  664. 664
    mathew f. Says:

WHY THE HELL DID HE TAKE LAROCHE OUT?

  665. 665
    bledsoe Says:

This is where we catch up to Roger.

  666. 666
    Alex R. Says:

she left TBS because Don Sutton though Marc Fein was just soooo much cuter!!! LOL.

  667. 667
    David Remy Says:

And Skip would rag on her every chance he got. He made no attempt to hide his contempt for her.

  668. 668
    Alex R. Says:

Ok…dumb luck will now help us get our run.

  669. 669
    JoeyT Says:

That error will LOSE THE GAME for the Astros.

  670. 670
    Rufino Linares Says:

Good hustle by Andruw there. Jesus.

  671. 671
    JoeyT Says:

It’s not dumb luck. It’s poor managing. It would be like Bobby trying to play Estrada at first.

  672. 672
    atlinl.a. Says:

“That error will LOSE THE GAME for the Astros.”

    Way to think positive there.

  673. 673
    Alex R. Says:

Skip is old school and sideline reporter is the most useless job in sports.

still, she is nice to look at and I am not against them sexing up the broadcasts with a little hottie like Erin.

  674. 674
    mathew f. Says:

    LAROCHE

  675. 675
    ermoore Says:

Why did he put Franco in anyways? Defense? Doesn’t seem right. Punishment for lollygagging around the bases?

  676. 676
    Sandor Says:

Ya know… WHEN this goes to a game 5 the managing will be really interesting seeing how tired everyone has to be.

  677. 677
    Mac Thomason Says:

  678. 678
    Rufino Linares Says:

Was LaRoche really lollygagging? I honestly thought that was just how slow he is- I mean, the man is really, really, really not fast.

  679. 679
    Alex R. Says:

like the 6 hrs of this freaking game.

    good eye, frenchie.

  680. 680
    JoeyT Says:

At 1023 comments, we’ll start uncovering software bugs.

  681. 681
    David Remy Says:

LaRoche was watching the ball instead of the third-base coach, causing him to lose a couple of steps.

  682. 682
    Alex R. Says:

    Rufino

I watched that replay and LAROCHE WAS DEFINITELY LOLLYGAGGING…THAT WAS NOT A SPEED ISSUE…I WATCHED WITH MY BUDDY EARLIER WHO IS A MARINERS FAN AND HAS NOT LOYLATIES EITHER WAY AND SAID IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT ADAM WAS LOLLYGAGGING.

  683. 683
    mathew f. Says:

i cant imagine it was for the baserunning. Maybe he got hurt.

  684. 684
    urlhix Says:

Your page views have to be insane too. I know I have refreshed about every minute or so. FORSIXFREAKINGHOURS!

  685. 685
    David Remy Says:

Okay, pronoun reference problem there: “causing [LaRoche] to lose a couple of steps.”

  686. 686
    James Says:

I can’t take much more of this.

    out of hand

  687. 687
    kc Says:

Mac, can you start a new thread for us?

  688. 688
    Alex R. Says:

    Sad thing?

My buddy Greg, the Mariners fan, is getting married in 3 weeks and had to leave my house for a dance lesson with his wife (as a football fan, he was grumpy about this)….anyway, the lesson is now over and he called me STUNNED that this game was over because he left right when Berkman hit the grand slam and it was 6-5. He asked if I was Ok and needed provisions and felt very sorry for me. really funny.

  689. 689
    JoeyT Says:

Peg Clemens here. It’s time to play dirty.

  690. 690
    Rufino Linares Says:

I think we should drill Clemens in the head. Who else does Houston have to pitch?

  691. 691
    Jason Says:

Try not to think of Rick Camp!!

  692. 692
    Alex R. Says:

well…the saving grace is that if Houston does eliminate us we are destroying Clemens for the St. Louis series.

Of course, though I hate Houston, I actually would ROOT for Houston because Tony LaRussa is the most evil man in Baseball NOT NAMED BARRY BONDS. I hate the Cardinals.

  693. 693
    Rufino Linares Says:

    Fuck.

He said that? F*** him. Yeah, we’re holding our heads HIGH. What an idiot.

  714. 714

    Wow…

  715. 715
    jenny Says:

I feel just awful for Joey Devine. Just awful,

  716. 716
    Brian Says:

The Braves had SO many chances to put this game away and didn’t get the job done. We got what we deserved, once again. It’s about time that our approach to winning be examined and changed. The Astros beat us with their Z-team. What does that tell you? It’s messed up.

    Brian

  717. 717
    atlinl.a. Says:

OK, I found a single bright spot: The Braves won’t be blowing Game 5 at home THIS year. No sir.

  718. 718
    Rob Cope Says:

I dunno, atlinl.a. Were we supposed to be here? Shouldn’t this be the Mets, Phillies, Marlins, or Nationals going home right now? I’m just going to keep this in perspective.

  719. 719
    jay319 Says:

i agree jenny; devine’s had a shitty year. hope he has a short memory.

  720. 720
    David Remy Says:

I hope Devine’s finished school. He’s going to need another trade.

  721. 721
    atlinl.a. Says:

To say it right now, though, when the people haven’t even left the stadium yet…over the winter is when you think about what you’ve accomplished to get there…

The division title streak is starting to feel hollow in the face of 1st round exit after 1st round exit…that’s 4 in a row, and 5 in 6 years.

  722. 722
    Rufino Linares Says:

Hey, ESPN went straight into showing all the Braves’ miscues today! Next, they will be sending reps to all our homes to give us third degree burns and then rub salt directly in them.

  723. 723
    Ben Says:

    I need a cold shower

  724. 724
    Mike Says:

Maybe we should give up the division title and go for the wild card next year, it seems to be working for everyone else.

  725. 725
    A. West Says:

That was an unbearably bad game, as if to torment braves fans and the team by exaggerating their faults. Leap ahead, then let the bullpen give it up, then highlight their inability to hit when it really means something.

Well, goodbye postseason. I don’t think the Braves will be wasting our time in October next year.

I won’t be surprised if Smoltz’ career is over now (worse than they admit and too late for another major surgery?), Furcal leaves because Ted Turner wanted to gamble on internet stocks 6 years ago. Looks like the Braves only have the budget and talent to be first round losers these days. Next year will probably be the first real rebuilding year.

  726. 726
    Chuck Says:

I guess it is time ti start predicting the teams look next year. .
